Prep Baseball Report's IA Preseason All-State event took place on Sunday, March 11, 2018. The event was held at SportsPlex West in Waukee, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2019, 2020 and 2021 grad classes. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and college coaches. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Preseason All-State

As we drill down into the statistics:

+   36 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+   56 players recorded 85+ mph exit velocities
+   33 players recorded 80+ mph infield throws
+   19 players recorded 80+ mph outfield throws
+   25 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+   16 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+   48 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

Tolik Bartz, C, Winterset, 2019
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.51 runner. Open narrow stance, easy leg kick trigger, clean path with extension through contact, solid bat speed, consistent solid ground ball and line drive contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid framer, flexible lower half, long release, tends to throw uphill, avg. accuracy to bag, 71 mph arm strength with 2.32-2.41 pop times.

TJ Bollers, C, Clear Creek-Amana, 2021
6-foot-4, 210-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Long athletic frame with above avg. physicality for grad class. 6.99 runner. Open stance, choppy rhythm, drives hands to baseball, stiffer finish through contact, above avg. present strength, drives ball to pull side, high interest prospect with continued development, 88 mph exit velocity. Works behind plate, raw mechanics typical for player his age, athletic frame behind plate, shows ability to frame pitches in zone, is flexible and shows mobility to block, 70 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.21 pop times.

Kaden Bollwinkel, C, Ankeny Centennial, 2019
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.36 runner. Open stance, leg kick trigger, shoulder load, effort in swing, all fields approach with hardest contact to pull side, 79 mph exit velocity. Strong glove hand, solid receiver, clean exchange, lower arm slot, tailing action on throws, 71 mph arm strength with 2.15-2.26 pop times.

Logan Booker, C, North Scott, 2019
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.64 runner. Open stance, front heel turn trigger, log hand set, stiffer line drive swing plane, spray contact during batting practice, 76 mph exit velocity. Above avg. blocker, solid/avg. receiver, struggles at times with low pitch, appropriate footwork on throws, some effort in release, avg. accuracy to bag, 72 mph arm strength with 2.19-2.39 pop times.

Brandon Chapman, C, Des Moines Lincoln, 2020
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 8.25 runner. Square stance, front heel turn trigger, choppy hand load, line drive swing plane, some stiffness with swing with 2 hands through extension, hard contact to pull side, tends to yank baseball, 87 mph exit velocity. Works through plate, level shoulders, clean exchange and release, solid receiver, blocks well behind plate with mobility, 73 mph arm strength with 2.03-2.09 pop times.

Gehrig Christensen, C, Urbandale, 2021
6-foot, 150-pound left-handed hitting catcher. Strong follow in Iowa 2021 class. Lean athletic frame that will add 20-25 pounds of strength. 7.48 runner. Square stance, shoulder load, clean path, above avg. bat speed for age, consistent solid contact, repeats swing well, above avg. barrel control, 89 mph exit velocity. Moves well behind plate, works through plate, quicker feet, clean exchange and release, stays level with shoulders, accurate to bag with carry on throws, sticks pitches, flexible and mobile, shows ability to block, 78 mph arm strength with 2.00-2.09 pop times.

Kannon Coakley, C, Maquoketa, 2021
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.87 runner. Follow in IA 2021 class. Body load with shoulder turn, looks to lift through contact, physical frame with solid present strength, spray contact with gap  to gap approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Quiet actions with rhythm, works through plate, level shoulders, accurate arm, solid receiver, sways to center pitches, shows ability to block, 77 mph arm strength with 1.98-2.1 pop times.

Nick Crandell, C, Johnston, 2020
6-foot-2, 172-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.33 runner. Open stance, leg kick trigger, some drift in hands, line drive and ground balls off bat, mid/pull approach with flashes of hard pull side contact, 82 mph exit velocity. Quiet actions behind plate, long release on throws, uphill, slight crow hop in footwork, avg. receiver, decent athlete, raw mechanic and should continue to improve, 75 mph arm strength with 2.12-2.2 pop times.

Dalton Delay, C, Linn Marr, 2021
5-foot-8, 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.54 runner. Crouched stance, still hands, inconsistent contact, 73 mph exit velocity. Longer release on throws, uphill, requires better direction and use of glove side, avg. receiver, 60 mph arm strength with 2.64-2.8 pop times.

Adam Denniston, C, Ottumwa, 2021
5-foot-10, 195-pound switch hitting catcher. 8.21 runner. Thick physical build for age, is raw from left-side with short load, avg. rhythm and pull approach. From the right-side has loose hands, flashes hard contact, line drive swing plane, with mid/pull approach, 79 mph exit velocity. Higher stance, receives with thumb underneath occasionally, clean exchange, keeps shoulders level, works through plate, avg. accuracy and carry to bag, 73 mph arm strength with 2.21-2.28 pop times.

Jackson Fisher, C/RHP, Chariton, 2019
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Newcomer to PBR event; will make jump into IA 2019 rankings. Athletic build with wiry strength. 7.08 runner. Wider stance, easy stride to square, slight shoulder load, balanced in box, consistent hard contact to all fields, 92 mph exit velocity. Above avg. carry and accuracy on throws, clean exchange, slight hitch in release, works through plate with momentum, solid receiver, some extra movements, athletic blocker, 78 mph arm strength with 1.98-2.06 pop times.

Jayden Gibson, C/RHP, Grinnell, 2019
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Western Illinois commit and #32 player in Iowa 2019 rankings. Lean build with present strength. 7.28 runner. Square stance, body load, compact swing, consistently squared baseball, gap to gap approach, doubles hitter with consistent contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Quick release with avg. direction, consistently around bag, shows solid arm strength, flexible and athletic behind plate, sticks pitches in zone, mobile with ability to block, 78 mph arm strength with 1.95-2.1 pop times.

Bryce Houser, C/RHP, Lone Tree, 2019
5-foot-8, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher and pitcher. 7.27 runner. Physical in box, body load with knee to knee trigger, some extra movements create inconsistent timing, hard pull contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Balanced setup, solid actions, raw mechanically but has good attributes and should continue to develop, extra glove movement when receiving, solid blocker, 75 mph arm strength with 2.13-2.25 pop times.

Easton Johnson, C/RHP, Gilbert, 2021
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.5 runner. Square stance, choppy knee to knee trigger, inverted swing plane, spray contact to mid/pull side of field, avg. barrel control, 81 mph exit velocity. Decent athlete behind plate, raw movements, extra step in footwork, shows arm strength, avg. accuracy to bag, should continue to develop body control with maturity and strength gains, 78 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.16 pop times.

Nick Kemper, C, Sioux Falls Lincoln (SD), 2019
6-foot, 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher. #50 ranked player in IA 2019 rankings. 6.97 runner. Slightly open stance, easy leg kick trigger, active hand load, hard line drive contact to pull side, short and quick to contact, shows barrel control and consistently squares baseball, 92 mph exit velocity. Quiet actions behind plate, solid/avg. receiver, works around plate, occasionally rushes throws, slight hitch in arm action, 75 mph arm strength with 2.02-2.15 pop times.

Brodey Key, C, Aplington-Parkerburg, 2020
5-foot-10, 210-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 8.12 runner. Square stance, weight shift to back leg, rolling hand load, some extra movements effect timing, line drive swing plane, some length to contact, sprays baseball to mid/pull side, 79 mph exit velocity. Flexible lower half, works through plate with long stride, lower arm slot, avg. carry and accuracy to bag, 72 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.15 pop times.

Hunter Krommenhoek, C, Sioux City North, 2019
5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.4 runner. Physical frame, medium base, larger movements to load, low hand set, flashes hard pull contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Quicker feet and exchange, some effort in release, solid accuracy, needs continued development receiving, some extra movements, should continue to improve behind plate, 76 mph arm strength with 2.00-2.16 pop times.

Jack Luster, C, Ballard, 2019
5-foot-10, 173-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.14 runner. Tall athletic stance, body load, slight leg kick trigger, works middle of field, linear bat path, stays on and through contact, consistently barrels baseball with hard contact, 90 mph exit velocity. Works through plate, short arm action, quicker release that is slightly uphill, solid carry and accuracy, shows solid ability to receive, quiet actions behind plate, 77 mph arm strength with 1.99-2.09 pop times. Will move into IA 2019 rankings.

Ian Moller, C, Dubuque Wahlert, 2021
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Louisiana State commit and #4 ranked player in PBR Overall for 2021 class. 7.32 runner. Wider stance with balance, body load, slight shoulder turn triggers swing, slight lift through contact, consistent hard contact, barrels baseballs with gap to gap approach, 94 mph exit velocity. Athletic behind plate, upper echelon quickness in feet and release, shows ability to receive above avg. pitching, solid blocker, throws short to bag that infielders could handle, 79 mph arm strength with 1.78-1.91 pop times.

Tyler Oberbroeckling, C, Linn-Marr, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. #39 players in IA 2019 rankings. 7.44 runner. Square stance, body load, solid rhythm in hands, slight collapse in posture through contact, flashes strength in swing, mid/pull approach, ground ball and line drive contact, 91 mph exit velocity. Flexible behind plate, quicker feet, clean exchange, athletic actions, solid carry and accuracy on throws, has receiving ability, quick and works to block efficiently, 76 mph arm strength with 1.9-2.07 pop times.

5-foot-10, 172-pound right-handed hitting catcher. #41 ranked player in Iowa 2019 class. 7.23 runner. Slightly open stance, larger leg kick, shoulder load, all fields approach, line drives off bat, mostly hard top spin contact, 92 mph exit velocity. Solid receiver, flexible behind plate, shows ability to block, clean arm action, solid carry to bag with accurate throws, 77 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.16 pop times.

Lewis Peters, C, Eastern Allamakee, 2020
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.34 runner. Open stance, strides square, slight rhythm in hands, consistent line drive and ground ball contact, works middle of field, 85 mph exit velocity. Quiet receiving actions, avg. blocker, longer stride to throw, tends to release uphill, long arm action, avg. accuracy to bag, 70 mph arm strength with 2.28-2.34 pop times.

Jake Reck, C, WDM Valley, 2020
6-foot, 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.25 runner. Square stance, arm bar, length to contact, inconsistent timing, spray contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Above avg. receiver, sticks pitches in zone, solid blocking ability, stiff arm action, lacks carry and accuracy, 73 mph arm strength with 2.31-2.4 pop times.

Kade Reinertson, C, Ballard, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Athletic build with present strength; frame should easily add 25-30 pounds with maturity. 7.56 runner.
