2024 Team Preview: Spring Lions

Prep Baseball Texas Staff

The 2024 Texas high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week and updating the Power 30 rankings.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Spring Lions and Coach Zeke Rodriguez return a young roster that features four players who earned All-District honors in 2023. Despite losing some All-District arms off the 2023 team, the Lions believe they’ll have enough firepower on offense to make up for the loss of pitching in 2024.

This year’s offense will be led by a trio of juniors who were First Team All-District players last season in INF/RHP Jesus Martinez (uncommitted), UTL/RHP Devon Castaneda (uncommitted), and INF/RHP Austin Wilkerson (uncommitted). The three will be equally instrumental on the mound for the Lions as they are all two-way players as well. Two-way ability is a common theme with the 2024 Lions squad as returning juniors 1B/LHP Carson Culberson (uncommitted) and OF/RHP Anthony Cuarenta (uncommitted) will both be expected to contribute on both sides of the ball.

The Lions sophomore class is led by returning UTL/RHP Nolan Wilkerson, who stood out as a freshman last season, earning Second Team All-District honors. Wilkerson will be joined in the sophomore class by 2024 newcomer LHP/UTL Damien Torres. Spring will also have two freshmen to follow in 2024 in RHP/UTL Travis Ellis, who we saw just this past August at the Houston Wildcatters Scout Day, and C/OF Angel Gamez.

Overall, there is a lot to be excited about in 2024 for Spring when you factor in the overall versatility of their roster, as well as the returning firepower they will have on offense. Look for the Spring Lions to be a factor throughout the 2024 6A spring season.
