TN HS Team Preview: Huntingdon Mustangs

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Huntingdon looks to bounce back after a rebuilding season that saw the club finish 13-15. They finished in 3rd place during the regular season with an exit in the district tournament with losses to Westview and to eventual TSSAA 2A state tournament runner up Milan. The Mustangs started slow with a 2-8 record out of the gate in March before finding more of their stride come April. This team however looks to take a complete 360 degree turn with multiple talented pieces coming back for the 2024 season. The Mustangs return almost their entire lineup from a season ago with 8 returning positional starters to go along with 5 returning pitchers that have seen meaningful innings. The Mustangs will be led offensively by junior infielder and Southern Miss commit Gray Eubanks. He should slide right back into the 2 or 3 hole spot in the lineup. Brady Warbritton will man a middle infield spot and looks to once again be their leadoff hitter and a stealing base threat. ‘26 class prospect and varsity starter as a freshman a season ago Silas Sharp will slide back into the 3 hole and be the staple backstop. Sophomores Caleb Ezell and Braylin Dearmon should make the call up to varsity and push for playing time but with a deep team this season, they may be suited to be used more as depth pieces with spot starts and plug n’ play innings. On the mound, the Mustangs will be led by ‘25 class prospect Easton Byars, who posted a 2.84 ERA with a 5-1 record a season ago. The club only scored over 10+ runs three times last season and can improve drastically in that regard on offense. This year’s strength looks to be their ability to throw strikes and play sound defense. I do believe hitting can end up being a strength of theirs if they are able to increase their contact percentage as the club racked up strikeouts at an extremely high rate last season. This is a team that plays in a competitive district but has many returning players to make this season a memorable one. I am high on the club and look for the Mustangs to compete atop their district with a high chance to make it out and push for a postseason run.
