PBR Florida Staff

On Thursday and Friday, the PBR Florida Preseason Open ran alongside the 2023 FL Preseason Classic. This two-day event featured some good matchups for teams to gear up for the start of the 2023 FHSAA regular season. The teams included Miami Christian, Jensen Beach, John Carroll, and Westminster Christian. Over the course of two days we saw hard throwing 2023s face off, uncommitted ‘23 arms make a name for themselves, former Future Games participants, potential 2025s looking to represent #TeamFL, committed 2026 arms, and much more.

Miami Christian vs. Jensen Beach

In Game 1 we saw Miami Christian defeat Jensen Beach 5-0. Chris Knier (IRSC commit) got the start for Jensen Beach, he struck out one and allowed zero hits in his one inning of work. His outing was cut short due to a HBP in the bottom of the 1st. For Miami Christian, Chris Diaz (Miami commit) took the ball and dominated. He fanned six over three innings of work allowing zero hits and zero runs. Offensively for Miami Christian, Jeter Polledo (Wake Forest commit), Willy Mendez, Jose Alfonso, Alejandro Abreut, Jesus Mosegue, and Jeymel Estrada all had hits in the game. Polledo and Dylan Prince each had RBIs and Estrada had two RBIs on a double in the 4th inning. Matthew Someillan and Jeffred Fermin combined for 4 innings of relief allowing no runs. Jensen Beach got hits from Cian Copeland, Dominic Donatucci, and Dylan Fatovich.

John Carroll vs. Westminster Christian

In the night game we had #TeamFL Future Games participant and FIU commit Tracen Cameron face off against Wake Forest commit Aaron Hernandez. Cameron went 1 inning allowing zero hits and struck out two. Hernandez kept hitters off balanced all night, striking out six over 4 innings allowing only one run on zero hits. Camrin Weeks threw 3 shutout innings of relief for John Carroll allowing zero hits. This game was hitless until the 6th when Westminster’s Ethan Puig (Miami commit) had an RBI double to tie things up at 1. Taggert Cameron was also solid in relief for John Carroll allowing just 1 run in 3 innings of work. Chris Estrada, Milan Porras, and Austin Wiegandt combined for 4 shutout innings in relief for Westminster Christian. The scoring gates were opened up in extra innings when Westminster Christian erupted for 5 runs in the top of the 8th. Puig and Chris Carroll (Dayton commit) both had RBI doubles as well as RBIs from Wiegandt and Jake Suarez. The game ended with Westminster defeating John Carroll 6-1 but the final score doesn’t indicate how good of a game this was to end night one of the Preseason Open.

Jensen Beach vs. Westminster Christian

In game 3 there was plenty of scoring. Westminster opened things up first in the bottom half with Chris Carroll scoring on a Daniel Hernandez sac-fly. Jensen Beach answered back in the 2nd erupting for 5 runs. Dylan Fatovich had a 3 RBI double and Kevin Smith (Louisville commit) tripled to extend the lead to 5-2. Things quieted down over the next couple innings, it wasn't until the 5th when Westminster took the lead scoring 7 runs. Austin Wiegandt, William Alvarez, and Gabriel Mejia all had RBIs in the inning. Cian Copeland would lead off the 5th with a double for Jensen Beach but the Falcons couldn’t get anything else going. Anthony Lowell threw 3 shutout innings, striking out 5 to close out things for Westminster. Final Westminster 9 Jensen Beach 5.

Miami Christian vs. John Carroll

In the final game of the Preseason Open we had another pitchers duel. Miami Christian defeated John Carroll 1-0. The Victors would score 1 run in the top of the 1st and that was the only run of the game. Jeter Polledo (Wake Forest), Jeymel Estrada, and Willy Mendez all had singles in the game for Miami Christian. John Carroll was limited to only 1 hit in the game and that came on a Jaylyn Monds single in the 5th inning. Colt Miller gave up 1 run in 3 innings of work and Hunter Watley worked 4 innings of shutout baseball in relief. For the Victors of Miami Christian they were led by Uncommitted 2023 David Bosque. Who struck out 7 over 3 innings allowing no hits. Matthew Fernandez and Nelson Martinez combined for 4 shutout innings in relief.

A huge thank you to the teams who attended the Preseason Open this year and best of luck this season!
