Q and A with 2013 Walsh Commit: Kevin Ilich (Canal Winchester HS)

Kevin Ilich, INF/OF, Canal Winchester HS, Class of 2013

PBR: Why did you choose Walsh?

Ilich:  There were many things that factored into my commitment to Walsh. The coaches, facilities, campus, and their recent move to the NCAA DII, were all huge factors in my decision.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Ilich:  Mount Vernon Nazarene

PBR: Where did the Walsh coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Ilich:  Coach Mead had some prior knowledge of me because Ross Etgen (another Walsh commit) and I play on Columbus Storm together. I went up for a visit, and everything fell in place after that.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Ilich:  Coach Mead expects me to come in and compete for playing time.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that you will help Walsh baseball?

Ilich:  My biggest strength is my versatility. I play every position except pitcher and catcher, and can hit in any spot in the order.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?

Ilich:  I play for the Columbus Storm. My most memorable experience was playing the Indiana Bulls at Indiana Wesleyan. I think we tied 7-7 but it was just a fantastic back and forth game, and both teams just played really high level baseball that day.

PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals both individually and for the team for the rest of your senior season?

Ilich: Our team goal is to win the league, and go deeper in the tournament this year than we did last year.  Individually I just want to keep improving and get ready for the next level.

PBR: What were your stats for last spring season at Canal Winchester?

Ilich: Last season, I hit .432, 7 doubles, 6 triples, 34 runs,18 rbi, and 15 SB

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher that you have faced in Ohio?

Ilich:  Jim Orwick, Findlay HS (Notre Dame Commit)
