Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week and updating the Power 30 rankings.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Benbrook Bobcats and Coach Justin Chavez bring back a young and talented squad for the 2024 season. After finishing as 4A Area Finalists in 2023, the Bobcats return nine guys with starting experience and this returning experience should help take the Bobcats where they want to go this spring.

Benbrook will be led by reigning First Team All-District senior CIF/OF Jaeden Powell, who remains uncommitted at this point. The Bobcats’ junior class will have four returning starters, with three earning All-District honors last season. Earning First Team All-District a year ago was a pair of two-way players in OF/RHP Ethan Smith (2025; uncommitted) and UTL/RHP Kade Cross (2025; uncommitted). Another junior two-way who earned All-District accolades last season that is returning for the Bobcats is UTL/RHP Jax Stockton (uncommitted - 2nd Team). Also returning among the Bobcats’ junior class is CIF/RHP Maverick Mills (uncommitted). UTL/RHP Lucas Jackson (2025; uncommitted) is projected to be a varsity newcomer in 2024 for Benbrook and should give Coach Chavez another two-way player to deploy in a variety of ways.

Returning four starters among the sophomore class who all received high honors within the district, Benbrook has a strong underclassmen core to build around entering 2024. The reigning District Offensive Player of the Year returns in INF Fabian Ortega, with the District Newcomer of the Year INF/RHP Sebastian Martinez, returning as well. Two additional returning sophomores were First Team All-District last season in RHP/UTL Hudson Stockton and C/OF Giulianno Martinez. Freshman OF/LHP Tanner Madara is a name to know entering the 2024 season and could make an immediate impact on varsity to begin his high school career this spring.

With the amount of returning starters they bring back, plus the overall versatility of the roster, Benbrook should be a strong team among the state’s 4A class this season. Look for the Bobcats to make a deeper postseason push in 2024.
