PBRT Alabama Open: Day 2 Standouts

PBR Alabama Staff

ALBERTVILLE, AL - The PBRT Alabama Open continued play with the last day of pool play games in Albertville, AL at the state-of-the-art Sand Mountain Sports Complex, which features four artificial-turf fields. It was a picture-perfect day of baseball with great weather for second day of pool play games over the two age divisions (15U & 17U). Our scouts were on hand for all games played, and there were plenty of standout performances throughout the day, both at the plate and on the mound. Teams and players were well-represented throughout the southeast part of the country, making for a perfect day of baseball.

Before we get cranked up with the final day of the tournament, our staff went back to take a look and highlight a few of the top performers from action on Day 2.

Day 2 Standouts

Mayson Elam SS / Northridge , AL / 2026

+ SS Mayson Elam (Five Star West Crimson, 2026) is already regarded as one of the top middle infielders in the rising sophomore class in AL, and showed why he was deserving of that recognition with a strong day at the plate in Day 2 of the tournament. Listed at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds, Elam is a wiry athlete that enjoyed a really good spring hitting in a talented and upperclassmen-led lineup for Northridge. During yesterday’s contest, the right-hander consistently found firm contact throughout his at-bats while recording a double and being robbed of another extra-base hit by a great defensive play in left field. The rising sophomore swings with controlled aggression and has good balance throughout his swing. He is a solid athlete and possesses a line drive, gap-to-gap approach hitting from the right side of the plate. Also being a skilled defender at the shortstop position, he will be a quality prospect to follow in the next few years in AL.

Brooks Mellown RHP / SS / Tuscaloosa County, AL / 2026

+ RHP Brooks Mellown (Five Star West Crimson, 2026) is coming off of a spring where he tossed some meaningful innings for a quality 7A program that won over 30 games on the season. After getting a quick viewing of the right-hander earlier in the spring in a relief outing, Mellown was given the ball for a start on Day 2 of the tournament and showed signs of already making a jump in just a few short months. Standing 6-foot-3, 190-pounds with some present strength and more on the way, the right-hander worked his fastball up to 86 mph in the first inning of his outing while working primarily in the low-80s with some arm-side run. His primary go-to offering for chase was a late-biting slider that tunneled well off of the heater at 74-75 mph. He collected numerous swings-and-misses with the offering and showed the ability to land it glove-side in late counts. Although the right-hander may have not thrown his best game, the arsenal of pitches and stronger, advanced frame has much to dream on in the future as he continues to develop and progress.

McClane Mohon INF / Piedmont, AL / 2024

+ McClane Mohon (Excel Baseball, 2024) continued to impress with gamer-type skill set hitting near the top of the order for Excel Baseball. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound infielder sports an athletic frame with room to add mass and strength. The uncommitted rising senior had multiple barrels including an inning extending RBI single through the left side of the infield and into left field. Mohon is also impressive on the base paths while looking to take the extra base with his athleticism and instincts. It's easy to see his competitive nature on the field being a very vocal leader. The uncommitted rising senior would be a good fit in any winning program.

Giovanni Russo 1B / Grissom, AL / 2025

+ 1B Giovanni Russo (6-4-3 Baseball, 2025) is a sturdy, big bodied and physically developed 6-foot-1, 215-pound body that has produced loud contact both days so far over in Albertville. During their morning action, Russo just missed a solo shot into right center but had to settle for a base hit off the fence. Serious power potential from the right side and in the heart of the 6-4-3 Baseball lineup, creates some natural lift in the swing with easy juice to all parts of the field.

Jackson Weglage LHP / OF / Randolph, AL / 2025

+ LHP Jackson Weglage (Knights South, 2025) had a nice start and cashed in early during his outing before running into some traffic in the middle innings. Longer limbed, lean and wiry 5-foot-10, 145-pound frame that has plenty of room to continue to fill out and develop over the next two years. Established the fastball to both sides of the plate and showed solid feel for the glove side offering. The fastball also worked up to 81 mph during the early innings of his outing and showed the curveball for the primary off-speed offering and had great feel for the zone, flipping the pitch in for strikes. Look for a few upticks in velocity as the body continues to fill out and add more size and strength.

Jack Blanchard OF / RHP / Daphne , AL / 2026

+ OF/RHP Jack Blanchard (Top Tier Roos Alabama 16U National, 2026) got the start on the bump for the Alabama Roos in their early morning contest. Logged five strong innings of work on the mound and held a quality opponent to just one run during his outing. Worked in the upper-70’s on the mound, pounded the strike zone and forced weaker contact with the breaking-ball as the primary offspeed offering. Found the barrel during his first at-bat as well, helped his own cause as he jumped on a pitch early in the at-bat and laced it back up the middle for an RBI single. In his next at-bat just missed extra bases with runners in scoring position as he hit a deep shot into left center but was run down for a long out. Leaner and high-waisted look to Blanchard at 5-foot-10, 145-pounds, athletic body with room to continue to develop and add size to the frame.
