Transformation Tuesday: 2018 3B Jase Felker

Chris Fuller
Kentucky Director of Scouting

One of the things I enjoy most is tracking a player's progress throughout their high school career. Getting the opportunity to see a player multiple times leads to us being able to feature the player's strides they make in their pursuit of playing at the next level.

Welcome to Transformation Tuesday, a feature that will include a player who has made big strides over the course of their high school career. It may be an uncommitted player, or one who has already committed but made huge strides from the first time we saw them.

Today we take a look at Caldwell County 2018 3B Jase Felker. Felker vaulted himself to the top-ranked third baseman in the class after his performance at last week's Unsigned Senior Showcase. Since we first saw Felker in the Fall of 2015, he has grown three inches and added 20 pounds to his now projectable 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame. His ability to switch-hit, and his overall athleticism makes him an intriguing next-level prospect. He has shown a steady climb in foot speed, arm strength, and bat speed over the last two years.

Scouting Report

12/28/17 - 60 Time: 7.00, Position Velocity:  IF-85, Exit Velocity: R-90/L-85
6-foot-2, 175-pound switch-hitter showed a big increase in measurables since we last saw him in Feb 2016. Good physical projection in 6-foot-2, 175 pound frame. Shows current gap to gap power from both sides of the plate. Will have ability to switch-hit at the next level. Athletic defender at third base with plenty of arm strength for the position. Hands are soft and moves well. Looks like he could play all three infield spots with ease. Makes strong and accurate throws across the diamond. A very quality all-around player still left on the board in the 2018 class.

2/13/16 - 60 Time: 7.50, Position Velocity:  IF-79, Exit Velocity: L-85, R-85
5-foot-11, 155-pound switch hitter made significant improvement in measurables from fall event. Hits from a sightly open stance and gets to square with a short stride, arm bar in right handed swing leads to slightly longer swing path than the left side, similar type hitter from both sides with a line drive approach and uses all fields, big jump in exit velocity from both sides. Hands are soft, fluid corner actions, high-3/4 release, nice jump in arm strength. Felker is one to watch from the 2018 class.

10/18/15 - 5-foot-11, 155-pound switch-hitter has a similar approach from both sides of the plate, hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, good balance throughout swing, swing path is slightly shorter from the left side, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, 81 mph exit velocity from the right side, 74 from the left side, ran 4.58 down the line from the left side, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to center field from the left side of the plate, made contact in all at bats. Shows soft hands with athletic corner actions defensively, moves fluidly in both directions, long high-3/4 release with accurate throws across the infield, 75 mph arm strength. Felker is an intriguing 2018 prospect with his switch-hitting ability.
