3A Regional Round Up

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Friday May 5th was the hoping round of regional tournaments in class 4A-1A. In a regional tournament you must win the opening round game, to advance to the state tournament. The next two games played will be used to determine seeding.

I travelled to Smackover to catch the 4-3A regional. Offensively the day was won by home runs, with the winning teams hitting 7 home runs that combined to drive in 16 runs of the 31 runs put up offensively by the four teams that won.  On the mound the winning teams struck out a combined 36 hitters on the day, including the shortened 5 inning game between Smackover and Fouke.

Some individuals that stood out on the day:

2018 RHP Wade Beasley Horatio HS; impressed with a 12 strike out performance in 6 innings pitched allowing 0 runs and striking out 12. He commanded the strike zone with his fastball 88-91 mph with late life through the zone. His curveball was thrown with fastball arm speed and worked 77-79 mph with 11/5 shape. Beasley also had a double and a homerun with 3 RBIs

2017 OF/RHP Beau Burson Smackover HS; An uncommitted senior; showed his ability to be a solid two-way player, allowing 0 earned runs in 5 innings with 5 strike outs and no walks. Offensively he was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and a homerun. He is a versatile athlete that competes at a high level.

2020 RHP Keelan Hodge Junction City HS; Hodge pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing 0 earned runs with 8 strike outs. He commanded the strike zone effectively with two pitches. His fastball worked 77-80 with slight arm side run, and he complimented it with a sharp 11/5 curveball thrown 70-71 mph. Overall Hodge is very intriguing with his feel to pitch and his loose quick arm.

2020 RHP Cason Brigham Genoa Central HS: Brigham threw 7 innings allowing 0 runs striking out 11 and allowing just 4 hits on the afternoon. He commanded the strike zone with a steady 2 pitch mix of his fastball and curveball. His fastball worked 75-78 mph and curveball was 68-71 mph 11/5 shape and late break. Brigham has a large frame and an average body, his advanced pitch ability, leaves him as a player to follow moving forward.

2018 C Masson Sellers Genoa Central HS: Sellers had a big day at the plate going 3 for 3 with 2 2B a HR and 3 RBIs. Offensively he works from an athletic stance, he uses a simple load stride combination and attacks the baseball with a slight uphill swing and fast bat speed. Defensively he showed adequate skill and effort blocking and receiving. In between innings arm showed carry and accuracy.
