Unsigned Senior Spotlight: OF Joshua Kuntz

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director – Illinois/Wisconsin

Today’s Unsigned Senior Spotlight features OF Joshua Kuntz (Lyons Township, 2014). Kuntz recently ranked as the No. 2 outfielder at the Unsigned Senior Showcase on October 13.

Since then Kuntz has seen added interest in his game. The fleet footed outfielder has already visited Grinnell and Illinois Wesleyan with a scheduled visit to Macalester on the horizon.

As well as Joshua Kuntzbeing a high tooled outfielder, Kuntz is also a high-academic student. According to Kuntz he has scored a 30 on his ACT as well as carrying a weighted 4.8 GPA in the classroom.

“I am looking for a school with very high academics. I am interested in Biology as an undergrad and the Physical Therapy field. Schools in the Ivy or Patriot League very much fit my liking,” said Kuntz.

Kuntz is obviously a highly self-motivated student-athlete. At 5-foot-10, 165-pounds he is a quick twitch athlete who has plus foot speed at 6.63. His speed and athleticism translate well defensively, taking solid routes with excellent footwork. His arm works equally as well at 86 mph staying on line and accurate.

At the plate he uses a balanced, athletic stance, with lowered hands. He takes a short stride with good use of his lower half. Swing is short and strong, with some explosiveness and whip through the zone and is a line drive hitter with a gap-to-gap approach.

Kuntz’s bat control is conducive for hitting in the two-hole which is where he normally finds himself both in the spring (Lyons Township) and summer (Top Tier) seasons.

Lyons Township has finished first and second in the summer state playoffs the last two years and Kuntz is hoping to turn that into a big run in 2014 at a State Championship.

“I am/will continue to focus on working very hard in the off-season to be ready to compete in the spring. My goals are nothing short of being the best team we can be with the great teammates I have.”
