Commitment Spotlight: 18' Tyler Milford, LHP/1B, TCU

Josh Threlkeld
Prep Baseball Report Minnesota

The PBR spotlight this morning will fall on TCU 1B/LHP Tyler Milford. A 5'11, 165lbs right handed hitting, left handed throwing senior, Tyler displays the ability to be a possible two-way guy as he heads to Dubuque. On the mound Milford has an easy, repeatable delivery from a high 3/4 arm slot produces consistent strikes and arm speed with all pitches. His approach in the batters box is very similar in that it is short and compact with very little wasted movement and hips that clear through the zone to allow for a level bat path. This spring TCU will rely on experience and team chemistry built over years of working and playing together to propel them to a deep playoff run. Congrats again to Tyler and best of luck this spring and down the road at Dubuque!

Scouting Report

3/20/17- 5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #71 ranked player in MN 2018 class. Short into balance point, easy delivery to plate with clean H ¾ arm action. Fastball was 75-77 mph with slight run at plate. Shows command of sweeping breaking ball with avg. depth. Consistent arm speed on changeup for strikes; and looks to be an above avg. pitch. 7.06 runner. Tall square stance, slight body load, compact swing and stays short to contact, works mid/away with consistent line drive contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete at position, works through ball, aggressive fielder, soft hands, accurate throws, comfortable receiving around bag, 73 mph arm strength across infield.

10/23/16- 5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.97 runner. Shows rhythm in load, body load with leg kick trigger, occasional pop in bat, line drive and fly ball contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Easy actions in field, tends to field on side losing balance and momentum, elevated throws to plate, average accuracy, 73 mph arm from outfield. Soft hands at first base, moves well around bag, works down to up through ground balls, 68 mph arm across infield. On mound; good tempo and body control, has direction to plate, athletic tendencies, arm is clean with short arm stroke. Fastball was 73-75 mph with slight running action to plate. Small short break with depth on curveball with 1/7 shape. Shows arm-side command of firm changeup thrown with fastball arm speed.

5/3/16- 5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.12 runner. Athletic frame. Athletic actions in OF, light on his feet, good direction to target, clean arm action from high ¾ slot, plays easy and fluid. 71 mph arm strength. Handles first base with ease. Varying shape on breaking ball with ability to land in zone for strikes. Above avg. action on changeup, firm, with good feel for zone. Follow player- solid mechanics and command- looking for velocity increase.

5-foot-8, 145-pound 2-way player. Lean frame. Ran a 7.4 60. Starts open and stays open throughout swing. Line-drive swing plane. Would benefit from more squared stance to pitcher. Most solid contact to pull side of field. 71 mph exit velocity off tee. Shows athletic actions and good glove at first base. Moves with purpose and reads hops well. Arm is accurate at 63 mph. Projectable body on mound. Some crouch at balance point. Fluid mechanics. Arm is loose and shows feel for zone with fastball and changeup. Fastball was 67-68 mph. Breaking ball is inconsistent. Stiff wrist at times with changeup causing flat action. Fills up zone with fastball. Mechanics are simple and repeatable. Lacks arm strength right now. Follow for 2018 class. Arm works well and has chance to develop.

PBR: Why did you choose Dubuque?
I chose UD for a few reasons.  First UD has great facilities and a really nice campus. I really liked Coach Wyczawski and all of his coaching staff from the moment I met them. Also a great group of guys on the team! I knew I wanted to be at UD from the first 15 minutes on campus.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
North Central University, St Johns in Collegeville, and Concordia Moorhead, were near the top of my list.  I also looked at some JUCO’s in Iowa.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him (Phone calls, on-campus visits, etc.)?
I reached out to coach Wyczawski through email to introduce myself along with sending him some video. We developed a relationship over a few phone calls that lead to an on-campus visit. Then, eventually, an overnight visit.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put Dubuque over the top?
UD has very nice facilities, and I liked a lot of what coach had to say about the program. I also liked that all the players had a lot of respect for coach Wyczawski.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
My dad has done the most for me throughout my life and career. I have also had many coaches who have helped and supported me along the way.

PBR: What plans do you have in store for you in your freshman season at your new school?
I am just excited to get to know all the guys on the team and the coaching staff.   I want to learn the system and support the team any way they need me.

PBR: What advice would you give to others that are currently or will soon be going through the recruiting process?
My advice would be to not wait for colleges or coaches to contact you.  Reach out to coaches on your own and develop a relationship.

PBR: Are you competing in any fall or winter sports?
No, I will be training hard this winter for next season.

PBR: In a few sentences, tell us about your high school team in terms of goals for the season and strengths your team possesses that will be pivotal in helping to get there (pitching, defense, offense, chemistry, etc.).
I think TCU will have a great High School season behind Coach Davis.  We have a lot of good athlete’s and have played together for a long time.  We have a lot of experience on our team and we play well together.
