AROUND THE HORN: WEEK 7 (March 25-31)

+ No. 11 Oxford Chargers

The #11 Chargers picked up two big time wins last week over the #1 ranked powerhouse, Lewisburg. Oxford got solid starting pitching from Ole Miss recruit Brady Stinnett in game one as he allowed just 2 runs over 6 1/3 innings, while Robert Upchurch closed the door for the save. In game 2 the Chargers relied on the offense a little more as Itawamba CC recruit Reid Kent, James Blackwood, Brady Stinnett all had doubles with Blackwood picking up 2. Robert Upchurch once again shut the door on any potential Patriot comeback and the 2 game sweep was secure. With a balanced attack the Chargers will look to position themselves with a solid seed in the 7A playoffs.

DATE TEAM SCORE
3/26 Oxford vs Southaven 10-5
3/28 Oxford vs. Lewisburg 4-2
3/30 Oxford vs. Lewisburg 5-4

+ Class 3A, No. 3 East Webster Wolverines

Holding down the No. 3 spot in Class 3A just behind Mooreville (15-4) and Kossuth (15-1) the Wolverines continue to plead their case for a top spot week in and week out as they have jumped out to a (14-2) start this season and show no signs of slowing down. Offensively they have been led by senior UTL Briceton Johnson who is hitting for a .449 clip this spring, with four triples, three home runs and 16 total RBI’s. On the mound senior RHP Carson Norwood and sophomore LHP Jordan Gaskin are a combined (7-1) and are both holding opposing hitter under the .180 mark at the plate. As we are in the middle of another week of the spring, look for the Wolverines to continue holding a top spot in Class 3A.

DATE TEAM SCORE
3/26 East Webster vs. Choctaw County 10-0
3/28 East Webster vs. Choctaw County 12-4

+ Class 1A, No. 3 Vardaman Rams

Vardaman (12-3) continues to be a top squad in the Class 1A Polls as they find themselves sitting at the No. 3 spot in 1A behind two talented squads in Biggersville (11-1) and Resurrection Catholic (12-2). Brady White and Ethan Parker both have been key producers at the plate and have found themselves hitting over the .400 mark through 15 games as they have both driven in over 18 runs each as well. On the hill, Andrew Easley and Brady White have tossed the majority of the innings for the Rams and will continue to serve as go to arms for them the remainder of the spring. Vardaman continues to be in the mix in Class 1A again here in the later parts of the regular season.

DATE TEAM SCORE
3/28 Vardaman vs. French Camp Academy 10-0
