FL Insider: Underclass Shortstops Playing at a High Level

Justin Burgess
Florida Area Scout

Today’s Florida Insider will examine a few underclass shortstops who have been playing at high level in recent events. These players all have at least a couple of tools to help them play at the next level and will likely be able to stay at shortstop.

Adam Torres SS, Heritage Christian 2017

Torres is an uncommitted incoming junior who stands at 5-foot-9, 150 pounds with an athletic and strong body and loose actions. He is quiet and relaxed at the plate with good rhythm. Torres gets a nice separation for his load, has a slight upper cut swing plane, and has average bat speed. Adam has quick, light feet in the field and attacks balls well with soft hands and has plenty of arm for SS. Torres’s defense alone should attract recruiters very soon and his bat should be a pleasant surprise as well.

Dalton Wingo SS, Plant City HS 2017

Wingo is an uncommitted incoming junior who is 6-foot-1, 170 pounds with a lean, athletic, and projectable frame with strength. At the plate he has an open stance, gets a good separation for his load, and has a nice swing plane. He has good bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat. Wingo’s ability to switch hit should be an asset that will draw the attention of even more schools. In the field he has decent hands and a strong arm across the diamond. Dalton’s bat looks like it could be in the middle of the order at the next level and his arm strength should keep him on the left side of the infield.

Henry Anthony Vilar MIF, Westminster Christian 2018

Vilar stands at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds with a lean and athletic body. He has a short, loose, high ¾ arm slot from SS and smooth, loose actions all over the field. Vilar gets a small separation and small hand trigger for his load and is quiet, relaxed, and patient at the plate. Henry has advanced tools and instincts for his age. Playing for the Elite Squad and a school like Westminster Christian has gotten him a lot of exposure already and will draw schools exclusively to see him in the near future. Although he is still young, Vilar’s defensive ability and smooth lefty stroke may allow him to commit before his junior year.
