2013 Underclass Spotlight: Brian Sommers (Worthington Kilbourne HS)

Brian Sommers, RHP/3B, Worthington Kilbourne HS

Junior, Brian Sommers is finally getting his chance to shine.  After lettering his first two years of high school, Sommers saw only limited innings on the mound due to playing with very experienced and talented teammates.

However, this year Brian is in the line-up every day and is the team’s #2 pitcher behind sophomore, OSU recruit Jacob Niggemeyer.

To date, the 5-foot-9, 180-pound right-hander is currently 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA through 28 innings and 18 strikeouts, in the OCC Central.  He displays a fastball that is in the low 80’s and a curveball, which is usually his out pitch.

At the plate, Sommers swings from the left side.  The backside hitter has a .365 average with 5 walks, 5 strikeouts..

Brian is just beginning the recruiting process and he feels he brings some strengths to the table for college coaches.

“I like to think that my abilities on the mound are my greatest strengths.  I can vary my pitches well and fool hitters.  I also think my bat is a big strength for me.”

With a 2.9 GPA, Sommers says, “I would like to make a decision no later than the end of my senior season.”

This summer, Brian will be playing for Worthington Post 239, where they will be competing for another State appearance.
