Checking-in with Zak Decamp from Columbus DeSales

Zak DeCamp, the 50th rated prospect in the Class of 2012, is one of the top corner infield prospects left on the recruiting board.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound corner infield prospect is a blend of power and speed. At the Top Prospect Event in July, DeCamp registered a 6.77 60-yard dash and 83 mph across the infield.

At the plate, he uses short, compact swing and a slight upward bat path to generate power to all fields.

He showed off that power in the Division II state championship game this spring at Huntington Park in June.

DeCamp, who was a part of a Columbus DeSales team that started the playoffs with a 13-9 record, propelled his team to victory with a go-ahead two run homerun against Akron Hoban.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, DeCamp says, “To be a member of a state championship team I guess is hard to explain … it is somewhat surreal because you have always dreamed about it and suddenly you are.”

Even more impressive, the Columbus DeSales team did not have a single senior on the roster. As a result, Decamp and fellow junior teammates Jack Miller and T.J. Alas embraced the role of leaders and elder statesman on such a young team. For DeCamp, it was natural. He recalls, “I felt that I had to step up and take part in a leadership role.”

With a state championship and summer season with the Ohio Elite baseball program behind him, DeCamp is focused on the recruiting process.

Right now, he is hearing from a mixture of Division I and Division II programs. His list includes: Wright State, Oakland, Ohio University, Akron, Lake Erie College, Ashland University, and Notre Dame College.

Looking towards the future, he notes, “My number one goal is to sign with a strong college program and try to repeat the state championship.”
