Top Prospect Games: Team White Player Analysis





On June 23-24, we hosted the third annual Top Prospect Games at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  The event consisted of 117 players, primarily within the 2016 and 2017 classes, which made up six teams (Red, White, Gold, Purple, Gray and Black).

Below we take a look at the players from Team White.

Alphabetical Order  

Matt Anderson, OF, Homestead, 2017:  The 6-foot-3 185 pound outfielder ran a 6.82 60 yd dash.  Defensively, he has a loose arm action and life on his throws.  Velocity was 91 from the outfield.  Hands were soft and footwork was fluid.  Offensively, Matt stands tall in his setup.  Small leg kick and average balance in his load.    Hands are fast and bat path is short.  Front hip tends to fly open.  Exit velocity was 87mph.  On the mound, fastball was 83-85 and thrown for strikes.  Curveball sat 65-68mph with 12/6 shape.  Pitches from a 3/4 slot with some arm speed.  Shows some rhythm in the delivery with level shoulders.  Tendency to fall off towards the 1B side.  

Carter Bridge, SS/OF, Lafayette Harrison, 2016:  The 5-foot-11 170 pound utility player ran a 6.86 60yd dash.  Carter displayed good actions in the infield and outfield.  Arm action is loose and throws were accurate.  Positional velocity was 83 from infield and 84 from outfield.  Hands were soft and exchange was clean.  Offensively, Carter has a balanced setup and fluid actions.  Bat speed is above average and level bat path.  Exit velocity was 86mph.

Brock Burns, OF, Hamilton Southeastern, 2017:  Possesses a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-4, 180 pounds.  Produced an exit velocity of 81 and a positional velocity of 84.  Brock’s arm action is long and loose.  Throws were accurate with clean footwork. Showcased sure hands in the field with some athleticism. Throws were accurate.  At the plate, he has a balanced setup and short stride.  Bat path is level and average bat speed. Produced line drives during BP with fluid rhythm. Backside has a tendency to collapse.  

Nick Casey, RHP, Chatard, 2016:  The 6-foot-3 190 pound pitcher sat 80-82 with some arm side run.  Delivery is smooth with some rhythm.  Arm action was high ¾ with above average arm speed and loose.  Curveball sat between 67-71 with gradual break.  Both pitches were thrown for strikes.  Has some projectability with an increase in arm speed. Fairly sound mechanics. 

Jacob Christie, C/3B, Batesville, 2017:  The 5-foot-10 170 pound catcher has a quick arm and transfer.  Feet were average and has a tendency to pop up.  Pop times were 2.11-2.25.  Offensively, Jacob has a balanced setup and minimal load.  Stride is short and approach is good.  Bat path is level with average bat speed.  Exit velocity was 71mph.  Jacob ran a 7.9 60 yard dash.

Samuel Crail, SS/OF, Sheridan, 2017:  The 5-foot-10 170 pound utility player displayed a short arm action with above average hands.  Footwork is fluid and exchange was quick.  Samuel’s positional velocity was 77mph.  He ran a 6.9 60 yard dash.  Offensively, he has a balanced setup and small leg kick.  Bat speed is fast with a level swing.  Exit velocity was 85mph. 

Ethan Froehlke, LHP/OF, Huntington North, 2017:  The 6-foot-2 180 pound lanky left-handed pitcher sat 79-80 on the fastball.  Curveball has 1/7 shape with early break at 71-73mph.  Change-up sat 70-73 and thrown near FB arm speed.   Off-speed was erratic and lacks identity.  Pitches from a 3/4 slot with average arm speed.  Uphill shoulders, some rhythm in the delivery.  Tendency to fall off towards 3B side. Lands open.  

JC Hanley, C/1B, Carmel, 2017: The 6-foot-1 195 pound catcher displayed quick feet and a long arm action.  Pop times were 2.01-2.15.  Throws were 73mph from the crouch.  Received well in game.  Offensively,  JC has a balanced setup and a short stride.  Bat path was level with extension.  Produced line drives during batting practice. Recorded a high exit velocity of 85 mph. JC ran a 7.12 60 yd dash.

Zach Kintz, OF, Norwell, 2016:  The 5-foot-11 170 pound outfielder ran a 6.85 60.  Zach has a long over the top arm action with average arm strength.  Positional velocity was 82mph. Showcased sure hands defensively with fluid footwork.  Clean exchange. Offensively, he has a balanced setup and long stride.  Bat speed is above average.  Zach produced several line drives in batting practice.  Exit velocity was 90mph.  

Zach Lane, LHP/OF, East Noble, 2017:  The 6-foot-2 155 pound left-handed pitcher sat 78-79 with some sink.  Pitches from a 3/4 slot with above average arm speed. Has some rhythm in the delivery with level shoulders.  Good line to the plate, lands open with an athletic finish.  Curveball sat 65-66 with gradual break. Offensively, he has a balanced setup and stride is short.  Bat speed is average and bat path is level.   Exit velocity was 75mph and 60 dash was a 7.68.  In the outfield showcased soft hands with fluid feet.  Clean exchange and plays through the ball with some athleticism.  Accurate arm at 79 mph. 

Blake Malatestinic, RHP/MIF, Cardinal Ritter, 2017:  The 5-foot-9 155 pound infielder ran a 7.08 60 yd dash.  Defensively, he has a short arm action and throws were accurate.  Positional velocity was 81mph. Showcased soft hands with fluid feet and exchange was quick.  At the plate, Blake has average bat speed and good balance.  He produced several line drives in batting practice.  Exit velocity was 77mph.  On the mound the RHP pitches from a 3/4 slot with quick arm speed.  Short arm action.  Level shoulders in the delivery with some rhythm. Good line to the plate with an athletic finish.  Fastball was kept down in the zone at 82-83.  Breaking ball shows an 11/5 shape with late action at 70-74.  Threw both pitches for a strike.  

Wendell Mosteller, LHP, Avon, 2017:  The 6-foot-1 185 pound left-handed pitcher displayed a ¾ arm slot with quick arm action.  His rhythm was rushed at time and direction is in line.  Fastball sat 75-77 and thrown for strikes.  Fastball has slight run.  Curveball was more of a sweeper and thrown at 61-62mph.  Change-up sat 64 with fade and thrown near FB arm speed.

John Nierman, LHP, Brebeuf, 2017: 6-foot-3, 190 pound left-hander pitches from a 3/4 slot with average arm speed.  Arm action is long.  Tall to fall delivery with some rhythm.  Uphill shoulders.  Good line to the plate with an athletic finish.  Lands open.  Fastball shows run at 75-76 and kept in the zone.  Breaking ball has a sweeping action with gradual break at 57-59.  Tendency to slow his arm down on the offspeed.   

Carter Poiry, RHP/3B, Hamilton Southeastern, 2016:  The 6-foot-3 200 pound right-handed pitcher sat 84-86 with slight run.  Arm action is low ¾ with some arm speed.  Balance is average and sometimes rushed. Good line to the plate, landing square with an athletic finish.  Fastball was thrown for strikes.  Breaking ball was thrown at 67-70mph with gradual break and 10/4 shape.  Offensively, he has a balanced setup and short stride.  Bat speed is above average with a short bat path.  Tendency to pull off.  Carter ran a 7.12 60 and had an exit velocity of 92.  In the field possesses sure hands with fluid feet.  Exchange was quick and clean  Has carry on his throws across the field at 85 mph.  

Sam Smith, SS/3B, Benton Central, 2016:  The 5-foot-11 175 pound infielder displayed soft hands and fluid footwork.    Throws had carry with some accuracy.  Infield velocity was 80mph.  Sam ran a 7.5 60 yd dash.  Offensively, Sam has a balanced setup and small leg kick.  Bat speed is average and bat path is uphill.  Sam’s exit velocity was 84mph.  

Tommy Sommer, LHP, Carmel, 2017:  The 6-foot-4 185 pound left-handed pitcher sat 81-83 with the fastball.  Fastball has slight run and sink while thrown for strikes on both sides of the plate.  Slider was thrown at 72-74 with late break.  Good putaway pitch.  Change-up was thrown at 71-74 with good depth.  Delivery is smooth with good balance.  Arm action is long and loose.  Good mound presence and pounded the zone with different pitches.  High follow in 2017 class.

Robbie Strader, MIF/3B, Roncalli, 2016:  The 6-foot 180 pound infielder displayed above average hands and quick exchange up the middle.  Arm action was ¾ and throws were accurate.  Positional velocity was 78mph.    Robbie ran a 7.08 60 yd dash.  At the plate, Robbie has a balanced setup and above average bat speed.  Balance is good and bat path is level.  Exit velocity was 81mph.

Cooper Trinkle, INF, Columbus North, 2017:  The 5-foot-10 180 pound infielder displayed soft hands and a fluid exchange.  Arm action was short and throws were accurate.  Positional velocity was 82mph.  Cooper ran a 7.00 60.  Offensively, Cooper has a balanced setup and a small leg kick.  Bat speed is fast and bat path is level with extension.  Exit velocity was 90mph.   

Bailey Waugh, RHP, Homestead, 2016:  The 6-foot 190 pound pitcher sat 81-83 mph with slight run and sink.  Fastball was thrown for strikes.  Curveball sat 65-66 with gradual break.  Change-up was 71-72 with fade and thrown at FB arm speed.  Bailey’s delivery includes a high ¾ arm slot and good balance.  Rhythm is smooth and shoulders stay level.   

Brayden White, C/RHP, North Putnam, 2016:  The 5-foot-10 210 catcher displayed a quick arm behind the plate.  Brayden has a tendency to pop up but gets through his throws.  Pop times were between 1.98-2.03.  Velocity was 76 from the crouch.  Offensively, hits from an open setup,  Hands drop during the load.  Short stride with average bat speed.  Long path to the baseball, pull-side type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 81 mph. On the mound, his fastball sat 82-83 and thrown for strikes.  Curveball sat 65-68 with gradual break and 11/5 shape.  Knuckleball was 68mph with good movement.  Arm action is quick.   Rhythm is smooth and has some effort.  Brayden ran a 7.93 60 yd dash.
