Colleyville vs. Monterey

ABILENE, TX- We were on site at Abilene Christian University, that played host to a Regional Final playoff matchup between No. 4 ranked Colleyville Heritage and Lubbock Monterey. With a trip to state laying in the balance, both teams would send out two reliable arms in RHP Austin Glaze for Colleyville and RHP Jaden Guerrero toeing the rubber for Monterey.

Both starting pitchers would throw a scoreless first and second, but it would be Monterey who would jump out to an early lead after a couple of uncharacteristic defensive miscues committed by Colleyville would result in two runs (2-0) coming across for the Plainsmen in the bottom-half of the third.

In the fourth, Colleyville would find themselves in situation to answer with runners on the corners. With the runner at first drawing some interest and a riled up crowd, RHP Guerrero would play into it by picking off consecutive times to first that would result in UNM commit Jacob Guerrero stealing home on the final pickoff move to first, cutting the deficit in half (2-1).

Monterey would again capitalize on another defensive miscue in the bottom-half of the fourth, after a dropped third strike would put a runner aboard. Junior RF John Long would be able to push that runner across on an RBI single through the middle of the field (3-1).

With Colleyville running out of at-bats, senior Auburn commit Mason Greer would spark a huge sixth with a leadoff double that just missed a home run off the right-field wall. DBU commit Chandler Freeman would follow with a single that would put runners in scoring position, and a big time inside-the-park home run from Guerrero that would get past the diving center fielder pushing across three for Colleyville giving them a 4-3 lead.

In the top-half of the seventh continued offensive productivity for Colleyville would come from reliable sources in SS Bobby Witt Jr. and Mason Greer. Witt who would pick up his first hit of the ballgame on an RBI triple down the left-field line, who would later score on a sac-fly from Greer to give the Panthers some insurance (6-3) heading into the bottom-half of the seventh. Colleyville would finish off Monterey after a flawless closing effort from Whitt and will advance to the state tournament to face No. 3 Georgetown.

Final Score: Colleyville Heritage 6, Lubbock Monterey 3.

Austin Glaze, RHP, Colleyville Heritage, 2019
Glaze has a strong, sturdy, athletic frame at an estimated 6-foot, 190-pounds, with plenty of room for continued physical development. Athletic, long, loose arm action, from a high ¾ arm slot, smooth, athletic repeatable delivery. Fastball sat 83-85 through the majority outing dropping to the low 80’s only a handful of times. CB showed gradual break with 11-5 shape at 66-69. Showed a change-up at 72-73 with some late sinking action. Overall a solid outing, was able to pound the strike zone and locate pitches to both sides of the plate.
