Last weekend was the second annual Commonwealth Classic held on Saturday, March 30, and Monday, April 1, at multiple locations in the Richmond area plus one extra game played in Northern Virginia. Games on the first day of action at each site were at 10 am and 1 pm at Ironbridge Academy in Chester and the evening games were at 4 pm and 7 pm at RF&P and Dorey Park.

Today we would like to announce our All-Tournament 2nd Team. Eleven players from some of the different teams that participated in the 2nd Annual Commonwealth Classic.

Pitchers

Chase Blumberg RHP / 1B / Atlee, VA / 2026

Blumberg was a pretty easy pick for the All-Tournament team. While he does not necessarily have overpowering stuff, the sophomore right hander just pitches. He held low 80’s throughout his outing and spun a breaking ball for strikes whenever he wanted. He threw a seven inning complete game that propelled Atlee to the championship game. Blumberg allowed only three hits and did not walk a baserunner while throwing roughly 75% strikes.

Bradley Zayac RHP / 3B / Grassfield, VA / 2024

The ECU commit did not have an extremely strong start, but it was how he finished that garnered him post tournament honors. Zayac worked seven innings, gave up two runs in the third inning and never looked back. In his final four innings, he faced one over the minimum, retiring twelve out of the final thirteen hitters, including four strikeouts in the last two innings. He got stronger as he went and the stuff maintained with the slider maybe being better.

Catcher

Chase Chamberlain C / 2B / Atlee, VA / 2025

A quiet leader and backbone of this Atlee defense. Chamberlain does not usually produce explosive offense, but he does the little things at the plate and behind the plate to add to his value. Solid receiver, solid blocker, and threw out multiple runners during this tournament. He showcased his accuracy, quick exchange, and solid arm strength. He is an active thrower and helps control the running game. He is a steadying force behind the plate.

First Base

Riley Roarty RHP / 3B / Benedictine, VA / 2024

Roarty got off to a slow start at the plate on Saturday, but had a really strong performance on Monday in the championship game. The VCU commit was 2 for 4 with a couple of hard hit singles, one RBI, and a stolen base. His most dominant performances usually come on the mound, but his biggest impact this tournament very well may have come via the leadoff spot for the Cadets.

Infielders

Matthew Hartsfield SS / C / Mills E Godwin , VA / 2026

The sophomore shortstop played some really steady defense for the Eagles, including making numerous plays up the middle. Over the course of three games, Hartsfield scored five runs and had three RBI, including a three run day versus Nansemond River on Saturday. Overall, a really strong tournament for the first year starter.

Cooper Molloy 2B / SS / Atlee, VA / 2026

The Atlee second baseman finished the tournament with a 3 for 7 performance, including a double on Saturday night in the semifinal game. That game alone probably cemented his place on an All-Tournament team. Lock down defender at second base and he made multiple tough plays in that game to go along with his two hit performance.

Will Toland 2B / OF / Benedictine College Preparatory, VA / 2024

Saturday was a big day for the Benedictine, senior second baseman. In their first game Toland had what was the game winning hit. He took a breaking ball down the right field line for a three run triple and made it a 5-2 game for the Cadets. In addition to his game winning hit versus Independence, Toland also had the walkoff sac fly in extra innings to advance the Cadets to the championship game on Monday. While he did not have a hit in Monday’s game, Toland saved what would have been the first run on the board when he doubled off the runner at second on a line drive up the middle. Co-Tournament MVP.

Outfielders

Giacomo Franco LHP / Grassfield, VA / 2026

Franco was one of the bright spots for the Grizzlies offense. His biggest game? Their first game versus Freedom where he was 1 for 2 with two runs and two RBI, as well as a walk. Franco’s single in the bottom of the fifth tied the game up and allowed teammate Bradley Zayac to deliver the go ahead single.

Edwin Sanchez OF / RHP / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2024

The Siena commit had one of the more consistent tournaments in terms of output. He was 3 for 8 throughout the course of the three games and walked twice. Sanchez is a strong, physical athlete whose bat to ball has improved and he showcased that this weekend.

David Trenkle OF / RHP / Mills Godwin , VA / 2024

4 for 9 with four runs scored over the course of the tournament, Trenkle was one of the most steady bats in the Godwin offense. There were some other bats that had explosive outputs with homeruns and extra base hits, but you got the same level of production out of the senior outfielder every day. Paul D. Camp commit.

Utility

Colton Hicks SS / RHP / Independence, VA / 2026

While the offense was up and down during the tournament, Hicks had a big double on Monday night versus Freedom. He drove in two runs and scored three over the course of the tournament. In addition to his big hit on Monday night, he also recorded the win versus Freedom. Hicks worked five innings and allowed two runs while striking out three.
