PBR Louisiana State Rankings: 2027 Class

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Fall baseball has started to wind down for most programs across the state with the high school baseball season approaching quickly.  The start of each high school baseball season is always fun and exciting, as we get to see who has put in the work over the course of the off-season.  Another reason for excitement is that we get to welcome a new crop of freshman to the high school baseball season, which is why we are ready to present everyone with our initial State Rankings for the 2027 Class.  It's always tough coming up with this initial list, but we've put in the work to get out and see as many prospects as possible in this class, dating back to the summer with our PBR branded tournaments, such as the Jr. Future Games and through the fall, at our Open ID events.  As with any initial rankings release, it's important to note that there will be plenty of movement as this class progresses through their high school careers, and there will be many more prospects added to this list.  Below, we dive into the Top 10 and what high school baseball fans can expect out of these prospects.  Be sure to follow us, across all of our social media platforms, as we continue to provide the best high school baseball coverage in the Bayou State!

TOP 10 (DEEP DIVE)

1. 2027 OF/2B Jordin Griffin (Barbe HS)

Griffin has been a household name for a few years and is a prospect that we've been anxiously awaiting to step foot on campus.  Athletic 5'8" 160 lbs. frame; the LSU commit is the most explosive athlete in the class and has the top-end speed to stick in centerfield for the long haul.  His explosiveness and quick-twitch show up in a big way in the box.  Griffin generates a ton of bat speed in a short window with lightning quick hands and serious lower-half torque that produces loud outputs.  Just last week, in an intersquad, we saw him destroy a 3-2 CH for a pull-side homerun.  He also drew two walks and hit a sac-fly to finish with four quality at-bats.  The Barbe HS product will be a fun follow the next four years and debuts as our top ranked prospect in the 2027 class.

2. 2027 RHP/INF Devyn Downs (Sterlington HS)

6'1" 175 lbs. frame with long limbs and present physicality.  The Sterlington HS product debuts as the top two-way prospect in the 2027 class and #2 overall.  Downs is another really good overall athlete and it showed this past fall, as he earned a starting role on the Panthers varsity football team.  On the mound, he already works his FB in the mid-80's with good life and spin rates up to 2454 RPM's.  He pairs it well with an "11-5" shaped 71-73 mph CB and can also pull the strings with a 78-79 mph CH.  Offensively, the LSU commit gets the barrel through the zone with some whip and can drive the ball from gap to gap with exit velocities up to 90 mph.  There's a really good chance that he factors into the varsity mix for Sterlington this spring, both at the plate and on the mound.

3. 2027 LHP/OF Lawton Littleton (Barbe HS)

Littleton is the second Barbe Buc to make this list at #3 overall and owning the top southpaw spot in the state.  His 6'0" 155 lbs. frame with wiry strength projects for much more physicality to come.  The former Jr. Future Gamer was really impressive on the mound this past summer at the Lakepoint Sports Complex.  Littleton exudes a calm demeanor with a low pulse, as he works through an athletic delivery with a clean arm path.  He can locate his 80-84 mph FB to all quadrants and he owns two good secondary offerings.  The first is a sharp "1-7" shaped low-70's CB that he can land for strikes and swing & miss, followed by a late-fading low-70's CH.  He gets good reads and jumps in the oufield and at the plate, he works short to long with a simple swing and can hit the ball to all fields.

4. 2027 C/RHP Myles Collins (Opelousas Catholic HS)

Collins has the looks of the next big Vikings prospect, following in the footsteps of his older brother Mark, who is a University of Louisiana-Lafayette signee.  The Opelousas Catholic HS product is currently one of the more physical prospects in this class at 6'2" 200 lbs. and he plays a premium position behind the dish.  He's an athletic backstop with arm strength and present pull-side power with exit velocities routinely into the low-90's.  Collins also offers intrigue and upside on the mound with a FB that's ticked into the mid-80's.  The state's 4th ranked prospect in the 2027 class is one of the many reasons why we can't wait to see Opelousas Catholic this coming spring.

5. 2027 RHP/INF Owen Galley (Sam Houston HS)

Galley was one of the more interesting players at last summer's Jr. Future Games, especially on the mound, and it looks like some added strength in the off-season has already started paying off.  We had the chance to see the 6'0" 150 lbs. freshman during an intersquad last week and he impressed.  A smooth mover down the slope with a clean arm path; Galley worked his FB to both sides of the plate at 83-85 mph, and he tunneled a 72-75 mph SL well off of it.  He also killed spin on a couple of 76-78 mph CH's and showed the ability to land it to both sides of the plate.  The Sam Houston HS product is also a steady defender up the middle with quality bat-to-ball skills, and looks like another really good Bronco prospect, as he debuts at #5 overall in the state.

6. 2027 INF/RHP Cullen Weller (Live Oak HS)

Athletic 5'9" 160 lbs. frame; the Live Oak HS product will likely be the Eagles "swiss-army knife".  Weller is a super versatile defender with the ability to play all three infield spots, in addition to putting on the gear and getting down in the crouch.  He's got soft hands and athletic actions with good arm strength at any spot as well.  The Tulane commit has an advanced hitting approach with a short, compact turn to contact with level extension and the ability to hit the ball to all fields.  We're not sure where he'll end up playing this coming spring, but we're confident that he will be on the field with the varsity and making an impact.

7. 2027 C/1B Nathan Cervantes (Northwood HS)

Physical 5'10" 200 lbs. frame with forearm and lower-half strength.  The Northwood HS product was another member of our Jr. Future Games team this past summer, where he made a name for himself with loud results with the bat.  A left-handed hitter; Cervantes works from an upright stance before delivering a heavy barrel to contact that produces exit velocities up to 92.2 mph.  His present pull-side power played in game, as well, as he connected for multiple XBH's at the Lakepoint Sports Complex.  Cervantes opens up at the #7 overall spot in the 2027 State Rankings.

8. 2027 OF/LHP Clayton Fontenot (St. Michael's HS)

Fontenot came away from last summer's Jr. Future Games as one of our favorite guys in the state's 2027 class, thanks to his high motor and relentless style of play that positively affects those around him.  The 5'10" 155 lbs. freshman is one of the better athletes in the class with plus speed, as he turned in a 6.69 laser-timed 60 in Atlanta last summer, which was good for tops at the Jr. Future Games.  What's even better, is that his speed plays in game, both in the outfield and on the basepaths.  The left-handed hitter works inside-out through the baseball to hit hard line drives/hard ground balls up the middle and to the oppostie field.  Fontenot is also not scared to lay a bunt down, which is another way that he's able to utilize his big carrying tool, which is his speed.

9. 2027 Dekohta Jones (Live Oak HS)

5'10" 150 lbs. athletic frame with a strong lower-half.  Jones is a "tooled up" prospect that offers a ton of upside and is a guy that could shoot up this list over the coming years.  The Live Oak HS product is an excellent athlete with really good speed.  He turned in a 6.84 laser-timed 60 at the Jr. Future Games last summer, which was good for third best at the event.  Offensively, there's still some rawness to his overall approach, but there's no denying the present bat speed (76.3 mph) and hand speed (24.3 mph) that produces loud results (93.6 mph max exit velocity) when he's synced up.

10. 2027 3B/RHP Koa Romero (Hahnville HS)

The Tigers have produced some really good prospects over the years and Romero looks like the next guy in line.  The physical 5'10" 198 lbs. freshman attended our State Games event this past fall, where he was matched up against some of the state's top prospects, and he didn't shy away from the competition.  Romero uses his strong lower-half to take a compact and tight turn to contact that produced exit velocities up to 93.2 mph, while showing present pull-side power.  He competed well in all of his at-bats, and even collected a backside single during Sunday's gameplay action.  On the mound, he owns a 80-84 mph FB with good ride and life thorugh the zone and spin rates up to 2554 RPM's.  He's also got aptitude and feel for spin with an "11-5" shaped CB that registered an average spin rate of 2460 RPM's.
