2024 Spring Team Preview: Milton Academy (MA)
MILTON, Ma. - It was not an easy decision but Brendan Morrissey is now the head coach at Milton Academy and ready for the challenges ahead.
“It was very difficult, I loved my time there,” Morrissey said of moving on from his job as head coach at his alma mater, Milton High School, the past six years. “This is just a baseball opportunity.”
The plan is now in place for Morrissey, who led Milton High School to the Division 2 championship the past two seasons.
“The coach had a great program here for a long time and I look to continue the hard work he put into it,” Morrissey said in reference to Kevin MacDonald, who had been in charge of Milton Academy for 27 years. “I’ll bring a lot of care for the kids, run a structured practice and structured program to put us in a good position while we have fun.”
Senior Matt Higgins and junior Davis Kahn are expected to form a strong one-two punch on the mound this season for the Mustangs. Higgins, the 31st-rated 2024 right-handed pitcher in New England, is a Colby commit while Kahn, a 6-8 RHP, is looking to build off an improved summer according to Morrissey.
“The rest of our pitchers are similar,” Morrissey noted. “We threw a lot of strikes in Florida (in mid-March) and we’re looking for a healthy start to the season.”
Nolan Wanat, the 17th-ranked junior catcher in New England who Morrissey pointed to as being a “power hitter, solid defensively with a strong arm,” will be behind the plate for the Mustangs. Kahn and sophomore Jordan Munsey will be taking throws at first base with left-handed hitting senior Curt Heath, a Bentley signee, at second base.
Andrew Millington, the eighth-ranked senior third baseman in New England, is penciled in to play shortstop with the Hamilton College commit joined on the left side of the infield at third base by sophomore Brandon West, the 15th-rated 2026 shortstop in New England.
Sophomore Jacob McNeil, “a young player with an unbelievable skill set, very athletic and extremely knowledgeable,” according to Morrissey, will be in center field with senior Will Cannata, called by the head coach “arguably the best athlete on the team,” in left field and Dylan Hunt in right. Cannata, who hit .538 last year, is going to Williams for hockey while Hunt will play hockey at Yale.
“We have a great group of kids that are very athletic,” Morrissey explained. “We’re trying to get them all on the same page and fit the pieces together and enjoy each other.
“How well we play defensively and throwing strikes will be the key. These guys love to run the bases but we need to do those other things to be successful.”
As for the Independent School League, Morrissey admits he has “a lot to learn about it” at this stage.
“There are some very good coaches in the league,” Morrissey concluded. “I look forward to competing in one of the best leagues in New England.”
