Who's Next For Ontario

June has turned into a hectic yet exciting month for baseball in Ontario.

Starting off with the MLB Draft, the likes of Noah Naylor, Eric Cerantola, Ben Abram, and Denzel Clarke all received the opportunity to hear their names get called. While the latter three will look to honour their school commitments, it seems as though Naylor is ready to take his talents over to the professional side and begin his journey to the Majors in the Cleveland Indians system.

Speaking of honouring school commitments, Ontario has seen some of its more talented names announce commitments of their own over the past week.

Starting off with two Canadian Junior National Team members, Daniel Carinci, an athletic shortstop with great baseball instincts and a knack for hitting has committed to Alabama. One of Canada’s top 2018 prospects, Carinci is beginning to physically mature, and shows tools all across the board.

Great Lake Canadians’ Griffin Hassall is another member of the Junior National Team and earlier this week announced his commitment to Kansas State. Up in the mid-to-high 80’s on his fastball, Hassall shows pitchability and a great feel for his offspeed stuff. With a long-limbed, projectable frame, there is more to come for Hassall as he is ready to commence his collegiate baseball career.

Other recent commitments included pitcher Malkolm Barrett to Dodge City, outfielder David Walling to Siena Heights University, outfielder Tanner Hodgson to Mars Hill University, first baseman Jeremy Schouppe to McCook Community College, and pitcher Connor Ambrogio to Brock University.

With all this taken into account, the next question that begs to be answered is who’s next? Which uncommitted Ontario prospects should be on the radars of coaches?

Ryan Johnston SS / 2B / Appleby College, ON / 2018

Report: An athletic and toolsy shortstop with room to add muscle as he continues to mature, Johnston will be a player to watch this summer. Shows tools across the board, hands work with quickness, and has solid bat-to-ball skills. Line-drive approach from the right side, stays inside the ball and is capable of using all fields. At short, the six-foot, 170-pound middle-infielder shows proper footwork, soft hands, and good natural instincts with a strong arm across the diamond. Johnston is a fun player to watch who should be on the radar of plenty of coaches this summer.
