Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

2 games of action to cover in this edition of the HS Scout Blog. With league play starting across the state, we're seeing more tightly contested matchups and teams are starting to hit their stride as we get to the midway point of the season.

In our first game between Tigard and Mountainside, the young Tigard squad got the job done behind some strong pitching performances against a deep and mature Mountainside lineup.

Then Sherwood and McMinnville both sent Division 1 arms to the mound in their first match-up of a 3 game series. In the end, the Grizzlies snuck out a 5-4 victory with some clutch hitting.

3.29.22 + 4.5.22

Buddy Brands ,RHP, Tigard, 2023 Oregon commit Got the start for the home squad and gave us our first look at the talented righty since we had him at the 2021 Future Games in August. Comfortably pitched at 86-88 early on with a firm SL/CUT at 76-80. Super easy and clean delivery with relaxed effort throughout. Pitched 84-86 later on with the FB while aslo showing more depth/bend with his SL in the low 70s. Finished with a final line of 5 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 7 K. Worked out of some jams and kept the opposing offense in check long enough to secure himself the win against a mature and deep Mountainside line-up. Overall, Brands shows plenty of poise/maturity on the bump with actions that project well for control and also future gains.

Jackson Barnachea, 3B, Tigard, 2024 One of the top ‘24 prospects in the state who came onto the scene strong between his showings last summer as well as back in the fall. Went 1-2 on this look with 1 R and 2 RBI. Got the job done early on as a RHH as he was facing a LHP and he has the ability to switch hit. Offensively he has a mature presence in the box with solid pitch recognition and strike zone discipline. The barrel to ball skills help him spray contact to all fields and he should continually add more power as he matures. Uncommitted.

Charlie Peters, OF, Tigard, 2022, Lane CC commit Peters got the game started off for Tigard with a leadoff single and shows the kind of confidence in his game that you’d expect to see from a Senior moving on to play at the next level. His above average speed plays well in CF and his left-handedness in the box makes him even more of a constant threat with the bat. Should continue to be a catalyst at the top of the line-up for Tigard throughout the season.

Brock Sandford, OF/LHP, Tigard, 2022 Sandford was a consistent presence on offense this game, going 1-1 with 2 R and a BB. Profiles well to corner OF with his L/L combo. In addition to his offensive contributions, he gave a stellar relief appearance as well. Going the final 2 frames and facing the minimum 6 batters while recording 2 punchouts. Uses a steady 3 pitch mix and understands how to disrupt timing. Uncommitted.

Kadin Kingsbury, OF, Mountainside, 2022 An athletic presence at the top of the lineup and in the OF. Kingsbury brings contact ability and speed from the right side of the plate. Lets the ball get deep and uses the big part of the field with a line drive approach. Defensively shows clean footwork and easy strides while tracking the ball. Went 1-3 on the day with 1 R and 1 BB. Uncommitted.

Andrew Miller, SS, Mountainside, 2022, Seattle commit Arguably the best athlete on the diamond, Miller stands out right away in pre-game with his size and bounce on the diamond. A tall, rangy athlete, he moves well at SS with quickness and body control. Arm path is longer for the INF but he gets the ball out quick and it shows plenty of carry when his feet are underneath him. Could easily float to other INF spots or possibly even handle OF duties if needed. Offensively he takes aggressive hacks with a natural feel for generating hard contact. Collected 3 hits on this look and was consistently competitive in his ABs. More power on the way as he continues to get more reps and adds strength.

Austin Wolfe, LHP, Mountainside, 2023 Got the start for Mountainside and showed some intriguing ability across his 3 innings of work. Fits the classic mold of a ‘pitchability’ lefty who attacks the zone with multiple offerings and makes big pitches out of the stretch. FB worked 79-81 with solid control. Pitches with easy effort so there’s likely more in the tank. Breaking ball has sweeping action at 74-75 and can be a tough look on LHH. Competitor on the bump with an aggressive but controlled pace. Uncommitted.

Brian Mannion, RHP, Mountainside, 2022, Linfield commit (football) QB1 who is slated to play on the gridiron next year at Linfield. The size, athleticism and arm strength translates to the mound & Mannion is having a highly productive year on the mound. Drives the ball downhill from his 6’3 frame with a high, over the top release. Stays tall throughout and creates downhill leverage at finish. Feel for hard, downer CB was a bit inconsistent on this look but it flashes above average at its best. Powerful arm who will eat up a lot of innings for Mountainside this season.

Braden Woods, OF, McMinnville, 2022 Woods got things started early for the Grizzlies offense with a leadoff single in the top of the 1st. Would eventually come around to score the first run of the game on a sac fly. Offensively uses a short, quick stroke that stays inside of the ball and works middle/oppo well. Flat, level swing path and a mature approach. Patrols the OF with confidence and shows a consistent, accurate arm. Finished the day 1-2 with 1 R and a BB. Uncommitted.

Parker Guinn, C/RHP, McMinnville, 2023 Filled the stat sheet on this look as he went 1-2 at the plate with 2 R, 1 RBI and 1 BB while also pitching the final 2 innings in relief. Offensively continues to show strong, quick wrists and a compact swing with gap-to-gap pop. Had a big hit in the 4th to push the Grizzlies lead to 4-0 at the time. On the mound, attacked with mostly FB in the low 80s and worked around some tough jams with runners on-base. Uncommitted.

Ky Hoskinson, SS/RHP, McMinnville, 2022, Cal St Bakersfield commit Continues to do it all on the diamond and is going to finish his senior season with impressive numbers across the board. Got the start on the mound and came out firing his FB at 87-89 with feel for a tight slurve at 75-76. Pitches with repeatable rhythm and a short, aggressive arm path with late intent. Offensively went 2-3 with 2 R and a BB. The pull-side pop and bat speed was on display and he torched a deep 3B into the LCF game in his 2nd AB. Arguably one of the top 2-way players in the state right now.

Evan Crawford, INF, McMinnville, 2023 Quietly had a big game at the plate as he consistently came up in big spots and got the job done when his number was called. Finished 2-3 with 2 RBI and delivered big in the top of the 7th to push across the eventual game winning run for McMinnville. Doesn’t overwhelm you with physicality or tools but Crawford is a steady presence who does all the little things right and should continue to make winning plays. Uncommitted

Ian Umlandt, LHP/1B, Sherwood, 2022, Oregon commit A consistent performer at the varsity level for years now, Umlandt has been a fixture in the Top 10 of state rankings since we first started covering Oregon. Flashed the full arsenal on the mound with this look, mixing between his FB at 85-86, top 87 and firm SL at 78-80. Uses an occasional straight CH as well, especially on that 3rd time thru the line up. Offensively he controls the barrel well from the left side and has consistent bat to ball skills. Up the middle approach with the chance to lift to his pull-side when he gets aggressive.

Cam Christensen, SS, Sherwood, 2022, Linn Benton commit One of the top senior INF’s in the state this year. Christensen plays a slick SS and provides an above average defensive presence in the middle of the diamond. At the plate, he went 1-3 with a RBI and BB on this look, saving his best AB for crunch time when he helped contribute to a 4 run 6th inning for the Bowmen. Hits with a loose, relaxed approach and sprays contact all over the field.

Connor Parry, RHP/2B, Sherwood, 2025 Had a brief but noteworthy appearance on the mound, retiring the side in only 11 pitches but flashed impressive velo for a Freshman arm. Reached back for 82-83 on the FB with his best bolt on this look with size and projection. Intriguing follow heading into the summer. Uncommitted.
