Canes Southwest Scout Day: Quick Hits

Brandon Gowins
Texas Scouting Director

WACO, TX -  On June 3rd & 4th, the PBR TX staff traveled to McLennan Junior College to host the Canes Southwest Scout Weekend. The event consisted of Canes Southwest players from the all HS classes participating in a pro style workout. They started by running a 60, using swift performance timing gates, then moved into the defensive workout. The day was capped off with a round of batting practice followed by splitting into teams and competing in games. Both portions collecting TrackMan data available in player profiles. Today, we take a look at the stat leaderboards from the day. We have the 2024-2026 Grads leaderboards followed by the 2027 & 2028 leaderboards.

Connor Comeau SS / 3B / Anderson , TX / 2026

I was a big fan of Comeau in the fall when I saw him, and he has made some big jumps since then.  The 6’3 righty has gotten a little more physical, and his numbers have taken a jump. His fastball was up to 86.6 from a long, low ¾ action. When it is right, he can really sink it. He compliments that pitch with a sweeping slider that he can generate a lot of swing and miss with.  Harms still has a lot of projection left in his frame, and I expect the velo will continue to rise.

Jacob Harms RHP / OF / Ranchview, TX / 2026

Harms is another that really impressed me last fall that has taken another step.  The 6’3 righty had the highest fastball velocity on the weekend topping out at 88.1 mph. Harms has a long, slower arm swing out of the glove that can cause him to be off time, but the arm speed is real.  He throws a mid to upper 70’s slider that can be a real weapon when it is right.  Harms also has a lot of projection left, and as the mechanics continue to tighten up, he could really start to blow up.

Caden Young C / 3B / Allen, TX / 2024

One of the best defenders behind the plate in North Texas, Young once again put that on display as well as having one of the better offensive weekends as well. Young was an event  best 1.97 during the workout portion and then I got him at a 1.94 in between innings. He is an accurate thrower as well, and really controls the running game. He is a good receiver and blocker of the ball as well.  Where he really is starting to come on is with the bat.  He showed some power potential during the end of the spring with some big swings, and then drove the ball with authority all weekend.  He barreled everything in gameplay as well.  There is still more offensively, and Young continues to gain some momentum as one of the top uncommitted backstops in Texas.

Pierce Hayden C / OF / Dripping Springs, TX / 2027

The 2027 backstop had himself a weekend, especially during gameplay. Hayden threw out multiple baserunners during gameplay and showed a quick release with an accurate arm. He moved well back there and did a good job of receiving as well. He had multiple barrels in gameplay as well.  Hayden has a good build, and could grow into a power hitting catcher, which is always fun.  He will go to Dripping Springs, and I am excited to see him progress.

Zackary Goldstein LHP / OF / Grapevine, TX / 2026

The LHP from Grapevine may have had the best performance on the mound for the weekend. He showed the ability to throw quality strikes with his full arsenal and got a high number of swing and misses in the zone.  His fastball was up to 82 and he was able to get to both sides of the plate with the pitch.  He really knew how to spin the ball as well. He could drop his breaker in for a strike or bury it when he needed to. Goldstein isn’t the tallest, but with his pitch ability and his competitiveness, I have a feeling he is going to be getting a lot of big outs.

Lucas McClintock RHP / OF / Llano, TX / 2028

McClintock was one of the youngest players at the Canes Scout Weekend, but he made his presence felt on the mound.  The athletic righty topped out at 81 mph on the mound.  He is a good athlete with a quick arm who is still learning his mechanics.  He has a shorter arm action and the ball jumps out of his hands.  He is still learning how to use his lower half, and when he does he is a strike thrower who can dominate.  He flashed a slider as well that showed the potential to be above average pitch down the line.  Overall, it was a very impressive day from McClintock and I am excited to see him develop.

Adi Patel LHP / OF / Allen, TX / 2024

Patel is a LHP from Allen HS who I got my first look at and was impressed.  The first thing is he is a high academic kid who has the grades to go anywhere, and I expect him to open some eyes this summer. He was in the low 80’s from a shorter arm action that allows him to hide the ball well.  There is room to gain strength and see the velo continue to rise.  He threw a tight, short breaking ball that he was able to drop in for a strike or bury to the back foot of a RHH.  He also barreled some balls at the plate from the left side.

Austin Isom OF / 3B / James Earl Rudder, TX / 2026

Isom had the highest exit velocity of the event with a max of 94.9 and showed a lot of bat speed throughout the weekend. He has a physical build with a lot of intent with each swing. He does a good job of stacking on his back side and uncoiling on the baseball. The bat shows up in games as well and I think he has a chance to really hit.  He showed a quality arm in the OF that should continue to improve and allow him to play all 3 OF positions.  Overall, it was a really good weekend for Isom.

Bryton Bertrand 1B / LHP / West Plains, TX / 2025

One of the better 2 way performances on the weekend belonged to Bertrand. The West Texas native had the second highest exit velocity on the weekend and it also showed up in the game. He showed the ability and willingness to use the whole field and could do it with authority. He also looked good on the mound.  His velo is still developing but he got outs and did a good job of changing speeds.

Cameron Hapes OF / LHP / Prosper, TX / 2024

The LHH outfielder from Prosper had a good weekend overall.  He is a good runner who has been clocked in the 6.7’s with PBR and it shows up during the games.  He puts constant pressure on the defense with his speed, as he gets out of the box quick and is always looking for the extra bag.  He had multiple barrels on the weekend showing the ability to use the whole field. Hapes has an intriguing skill set, and I expect we see some big things from him this summer.

Cayden Hill SS / 2B / Scurry Rosser, TX / 2024

Hill showed good athleticism all weekend and the ability to stick up the middle long term.  He is a 6.7 runner and plays with some bounce.  He has a compact swing that is geared for line drives and using the big part of the field.  Hill still has some projection in the frame, and has another jump to make.  He also hopped on the mound and showed some feel for the zone with a low 80’s fastball.
