Semler's Prospect & Follow Reports: 4.1-4.7

Max Semler
North Texas Scouting Director

Over the week I was able to get looks at Coppell HS 6-2 win at Plano West, Boswell HS 3-2 victory at LD Belland  Flower Mounds 6-3 win at Argyle in a matchup of highly ranked teams. All the games were well played with some underclass players showing projectable tools. Most of these underclass players are uncommitted at this time.

High Follow: scout this player. Present tools are there, he can enter pro ball and hold his own.

Low Follow: some present tools with a lot of projection or with college players limited upside. This does not mean this player is not a prospect, not a priority look to start the year.

Pocket Follow: no carrying tool presently to go out and play professionally or at a Major D1 program. But, does things on the baseball field that attract your attention. This type of player needs strength, needs to mature physically or with a pitcher…velocity needs to take a jump.

DATE: 4/5/24
Present Grade
Future Grade Notes
Hit 50

Switch hitter, only saw RHH this day. Avg bat speed seen. Pull approach from the right side. Toe tap present, timing lacks consistency

Power 30 40

Power will come, more of doubles to gaps for me with over the fence power to pull side from both LH and RH

Throw 50 55

Avg arm strength now, see with abv avg arm strength in future, could get to solid plus.

Field 45 60

Good footwork with actions present, ability to make plays on the move and throw from all angles. Project plus defender in future

Run 70 70

WAA run, pressures defense.

*Grades follow the 20-80 scale, with 50 used as the MLB average.

  • Strengths:    Sawyer has shown his dedication with the strength that he has gained since the summer. Defensively steady with solid actions, makes plays on the move showing body control and agility. Run tool can impact the game. Will get his share of SB’s
  • Weaknesses:  RH hit approach was pull happy. Toe tap present, lacked getting stride foot down on time with consistency. Will get his share of SB’s with his raw speed, 1st step stealing will have to improve to be plus base stealer
  • Thoughts on Game:  Sawyer played good defense, to end game made a play on a slow roller to his right showing good 1st step with body control, showed avg arm strength on the move with accuracy. Line drive with solid contact putting pressure on the defense getting out of the box. Multiple SB’s this day
  • Summation: Good player, love the dedication he showed in the weight room adding strength in off season. Improved strength is showing on the field. Checks defense box with actions, body control, agility, projects well in the future with the glove. Arm will be fine, run tool is WAA. RHH shows avg bat speed, can clean up timing issue for bat to play. Did not see LHH. I like this player, teams that have an interest in Sawyer and confidence in the bat continue to scout him the remainder of the year.

Strengths: Athletic, good build frame for future strength. Near avg arm strength now when he gets his feet set. Hard contact off barrel, good approach to hit. Feel for blocking balls.

Summation: Soph HS catcher with good build/frame to add strength. Near avg arm strength now with accuracy present. Good swing, hard contact, line drive approach. Held his own in big district match up
