2014 Underclass Spotlight: Justin Mott (Amherst HS)

Justin Mott

Justin Mott, C/RHP, Amherst HS, Class of 2014

At 5-foot-8, 145-pounds, Amherst HS sophomore catcher Justin Mott will never be the biggest player on the baseball field.

But, that doesn’t stop him from showcasing advanced skills that could lead to opportunities at the next level.

Mott, who projects as a catcher, displays an excellent skill set that will help Amherst in their pursuit for a conference championship.

His scouting report notes:

Very active 5-foot-8, 145-pound receiver. Will have to gain body strength to achieve durability on the next level. Shows very good catching skills. Blocks well laterally and accepts ball. Good release (76 mph) with a 1.94-2.01 pop time. Seems to take charge well.

This winter, Mott participated in the Top Prospect Showcase and the Pre-Season Underclass Showcase.

In his latest appearance, he showcased his skills on the mound as well.

The righty uses quick arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot. He shows a heavy 80-83 mph fastball with some sink. His curveball sits 65-67 and shows sharp 12/6 breaking action. His knuckle ball fluctuates between 57-66 mph and shows some tumble.

Reflecting on his performance, Mott notes, “I felt good and so did my arm.  My pop time was good too. This was the first showcase I did for pitching this year.”

Still, the talented prospect from Northeast Ohio has room to improve at the plate, where his swing tends to get a bit long.

He is quick to say, “I need to become a more consistent hitter.”

Right now, Mott is beginning to hear from several different schools, including Ashland, Michigan State, UNC Ashville, Cincinnati, and Central Michigan.

In addition to attending PBR events this winter, Mott has been active this winter working out with his summer team, Northern Ohio Baseball Club, as well as lifting and conditioning.

This spring, Mott will look to complement a talented Amherst roster that features Division I right-handed pitching prospects Griffin Weir and Shawn Reid, both from the Class of 2013.

Mott says, “Brecksville and Avon Lake will be our toughest conference opponents, but I am looking forward to playing Walsh Jesuit and St. Ignatius.”

Again, this summer Mott will be playing for the 16U Northern Ohio Baseball Club, which also features highly ranked 2014 classmates Nick Longo, Marcus Gunter, and Frank Cioffi.

He will be participating in PBR’s Underclass Games at The Ohio State University and the Midwest Futures Games at the University of Illinois.
