PBR Spotlight Game: Ontario Outlaws 16u vs Ontario Yankees 16u

PICKERING – Saturday morning was a battle of the pitchers as the Ontario Outlaws and Ontario Yankees split the doubleheader 4-0 Outlaws in game 1 and 3-1 Yankees in game 2.

Game one saw LHP Connor Humphry start for the Outlaws and RHP Jared Evans for the Yankees.

The Outlaws showed a lot of patience at the plate and made Evans work. In total they managed to work 8 walks. Evans worked out of a couple of jams, but in the end, the walks hurt him leading to 3 earned runs.

Humphry was did not display overpowering stuff, but he located his pitches well and kept the Yankee hitters off-balance with his changeup and curveball. At one point, he retired 12 straight batters and carried a no-hitter into the 7th.

But, with 2 outs in the final frame, 1B Josh Arce managed an infield single deep in the hole to short and beat out the throw. In the end, Humphry finished with a complete game 1-hit shutout and striking out 8.

Game two saw RHP Liam Miller-North start for the Yankees and RHP Sam Worthen for the Outlaws.

Miller-North got into an early jam walking three in a row in the 1st, but left the bases loaded by getting a strikeout on a good curveball and inducing a groundball to 2nd to end the inning.

The Outlaws got on the board first in the second after a one-out walk managed to score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. After a one-out double in the 3rd, Miller-North settled into a groove and retired the next 11 batters he faced and finished with a complete-game, while striking out 13.

The Yankees had trouble all day trying to string some hits together, but they finally did late in game two.

RF Matthew Funk got the Yankees going in their half of the 6th.

With two outs, he lined a double to the left-centrefield gap and then scored on an RBI single from C/P James De Sousa to tie the game 1-1.

C/DH Kyle Bryan led off the Yankees 7th with a base hit to left. 2B Brett O’Hare moved his teammate over to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt. After SS Griffin Oliver reached base on an error, LF Aiden Ali came through with a 2-out, 2-run double to the left-centrefield gap that put the Yankees on top 3-1 for good.
