State Championship Recap: Day 2

By: Zac Bottoms

Championship week end is always a great experience, this year featured everything, four one run games, pitcher’s duals, slugfest, overall just a good baseball. Here is a look at the three games that happened Saturday.

3A: Fordyce High School vs Mayflower High School

Mayflower HS defeats Fordyce HS 6-1 in the 3A State Championship game.

2015 RHP Tyler Godwin was sharp for the Eagles, throwing a complete game four hitter, with 10 strike outs, to pick up the win and the tournament MVP.

Offensively, Mayflower used a 3 run 3rd and 3 more in the 6th to give Godwin some breathing room. In the third they banged out 5 hits, highlighted by a 2015 OF Tyler Herrin’s infield single that scored Paxton Templeton and Drew Duncan. Duncan scored from second on aggressive base running.

In the 6th the Eagles received great at bats from two pinch hitters as Bryan Jones and J.L. Jones both came off the bench to single in runs.

This win gives Mayflower their first baseball state championship, if that wasn’t enough, it also vindicated the last two seasons of losing to Fordyce as they made trips to the championship.

Fordcye HS fell just short for the third consecutive year, received a good performance from 2016 Ross Rogers on the mound who threw 6 innings allowing just 3 earned runs. 2016 INF Tommy Tidwell had two of the Redbugs four hits.

5A: Harrison High School vs White Hall High School

Harrison HS defeated White Hall HS 2-1 to win the 5A State Championship.

The game started off hot with both teams scoring runs in the first. White Hall Hs scored 1 run in the top of the first when 2015 Kirk Baugh drove a ball over the left-field wall with 2 outs. Harrison answered with 2 runs on two singles by 2015 OF Silas Humphries, and 2015 INF Hunter Humphrey.

That was all 2015 LHP Andrew Fitzgerald needed, Fitzgerald pitched the next 5 innings shutting down the Bulldog offense scattering 3 hits. He was relieved when 2015 CIF Alec Hartz doubled down the right-field line to lead off the 7th. 2015 RHP Hunter Marshall worked around the double recording 2 strike outs to pick up the save.

White Hall picked up a great performance by 2015 RHP Daniel Sprinkle who threw 6 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits while striking out 5.

Harrison HS wins their first state title since 2008, while White Hall HS falls just shy of defending their state title in 2014.

6A: Benton High School vs Sheridan High School

Sheridan HS beat Benton HS 10-9 in the 6A State Championship Game. Sheridan has been a consistent threat to win the State Championship, this 2015 group finally broke through for Coach Mike Moore winning his and the school’s first state championship.

Sheridan used a gritty pitching performance and a hot bats to pick up the victory.  The Yellow jackets offense scored 3 runs in the 1st, 3 in the 5th and 4 in the 6th.

2015 Tyler Allen pitched seven innings allowing 9 runs on 11 hits while striking out 4.  This stat line is somewhat skewed as he only allowed 4 runs over his first 6 innings and was touched up in the 7th pitching with a 6 run lead.

Whitley and Hicks has a big day for the Yellow jackets combining to drive in 5 runs and score another run. Whitley was 2 for 4 with 2 singles and 3 RBIs, while Hicks was 2 for 3 with a walk 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Benton scratched its way back into the game with a 2 run homerun by 2016 OF Chase Nix in the 6th to cut the lead to 6-4. After Sheridan Scored 4 more runs in the top of the 7th the game appeared to be over.

The Panthers showed a gutsy performance scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th to fall just short of the victory. 2016 C Brinson Williams 3 run homerun highlighted to 5 run rally.
