Commitment Q&A with Kansas Signee Xander Schmitt

By: PBR Missouri Staff

C/OF Xander Schmitt (Lafayette) is one of the top prospects in the state's senior class, sitting currently inside our top-15 for the 2024 class and is the No. 1 ranked catcher in the state.

Schmitt was one of the biggest winners back in the summer of 2022 where he had a standout performance at the St. Louis Top Prospect Games, earning himself an invite to the PBR Future Games as a member of Team Missouri. It was at those Future Games where Schmitt had a breakout performance, earning Future Games MVP honors after a perfect 7-7 week at the plate including 4 doubles.

Shortly after the Future Games, in early October, Schmitt announced his commitment to Kansas.

Recently we spoke to the Kansas signee on why he chose the Jayhawks, his favorite baseball memory, who his toughest opponent has been to date, and we even got a brief glimpse into Lafayette's upcoming season.

OUR Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Schmitt: My expectations of the recruiting process, I wanted it to be super easy and not have to worry so much about where I’m going and more so a place that felt like I belonged, and one where it felt like I found my home.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Schmitt: Location was never a factor I just wanted an opportunity to play college baseball at the highest level where ever it may be.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

Schmitt: The recruiting process really started to speed up right after the futures games, after I won MVP of the tournament. Kansas saw me play there and loved what they saw and brought me down for a vist and I fell in love with the program.

PBR: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Schmitt: I love how the coaches want it and don’t just want to win they want you to succeed. They want to make you better than you thought you could be. The main factor was stepping onto campus and it feeling like home.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Schmitt: Missouri State and Utah.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

Schmitt: Definitely has to be John Paul, he always plays his and always wants to win, he’s a great pitcher and always so hard to figure out when on the mound.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Schmitt: My sophomore year of highschool is when I really decided it was time to only focus on baseball and start to pursue my dreams.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Schmitt: Have fun and don’t worry about anything you can’t control, the best part of baseball is making memories with your friends and enjoying the game.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Schmitt: Has to be my junior year of highschool when we came back against Rockwood Summit when we were down 7-1 going into bottom of 7th inning and I hit a walk off single to win the game.

PBR: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

Schmitt: I think we should be a very good team, we are very offense heavy this year. I think a lot of guys are going to have to step up on the pitching side but if we can figure that out we will be a super hard team to beat.
