Unsigned Senior RHP/3B Daulton Mason Shows Recent Velocity Gains and Discusses the Recruiting Process

There’s an old adage that states “you’re only as good as your last outing.”  If that rings true, that’s a good thing for Daulton Mason.

The unsigned senior, a 6-foot, 190-pound RHP/3B from Lewis County HS, participated in the PBR Kentucky Fall Prospect Program.  The program allowed players to showcase their abilities over five weeks at different college campuses around the state.

After showing a fastball that topped at 83 mph at the Unsigned Senior Games event in August, Mason spent most of the Fall Program with a fastball that never got above 81.  That is, until the final week of the program.

On October 27, the Fall Prospect Program wrapped up with a stop at the University of Kentucky, and Mason took advantage of his final opportunity to make an impression on the mound.  His fastball showed life at 83-85 mph, and his 67-70 mph curveball was as good as we have seen it.  Mason cruised through two hitless innings, striking out three in the process.

“I felt like I had the life back in my arm,” Mason said.  “I had been playing 2-3 fall ball games every week and working hard in the weight room, and by the time Sunday would roll around I felt like my arm had no life.”

Mason also showed solid two-way ability throughout the program.  His arm plays well from third base at 80 mph, and he shows good corner actions.  He uses his strong frame to generate good bat speed, as evidenced by his 91 mph exit velocity off the tee.  The ball jumps off his bat, and he hit 6 home runs as a junior at Mason County last year.

As for the recruiting process, Mason has put himself on the radar of several NAI A schools.

“I made a visit to St. Catharine College, and I’m visiting Pikeville on December 7,” he stated.  “Alice Lloyd and Brescia have contacted me about setting up visits, as well.”

In addition, Mason has had recent communications with Division II Ohio Dominican.

“I sent the link to my PBR profile to Ohio Dominican, and after they watched the videos, they contacted me wanting to get my GPA and ACT score,” he said.  “I think I will be setting up a visit with them soon.   I’m open to anything and am really looking to find the best fit for me.   I think the junior college route might be a good option for me, also.”

Mason, currently ranked No.67 in the 2014 class, says he is reaping the benefits of attending PBR events.

“Prior to attending the Unsigned Senior Games in August, I hadn’t received any interest from colleges, not even a single email.” he explained.  “I was starting to get worried, thinking maybe the interest wasn’t going to come.  There is no doubt that PBR has helped me tremendously.”

Sounds like a busy couple of months are awaiting Mason.
