Season Outlook

The 2017 Edmond Memorial Bulldogs will return five starting position players this year along with one starting pitcher. Some would argue that the Edmond Memorial was not the most talented team in 6A last season, but they found a way to get hot and win close ball games at the end  of the year on their way to a state title. They will look to do the same this year.

On the mound, the Bulldogs will be lead by senior Dodge City commit Bryce Newsom who was a staple in the rotation last season. Joining Newsom in the rotation will likely be seniors Chris Villalon and Dawson Hicks along with sophomore Coit Morton. Senior D.J. Calvert will likely see a few innings on the mound as well when the Bulldogs can afford to let him leave his post at shortstop. Two freshman, left-hander Colby Routh and right-hander Trace Evans, have shown flashes of what it takes on the mound and may develop as weapons for the Bulldogs.

Offensively, Edmond Memorial will be lead by four college bound senior. Dylan Caplinger, left-handed hitting Ashton Francis, Calvert, and Newsom will all be tough outs in the middle of the order. Senior Casey High will also add some pop to the lineup. The Bulldogs could add some young talent to the line up with continued development from Morton, and freshmen Major Kerr, Evans, and Zachary Escovedo.

Defensively, like all good teams, the Bulldogs will be strongest through the middle of the field lead by Caplinger behind the dish, Calvert at shortstop, and Brock Hummel at second base. Newsom will patrol center field when not on the mound and senior Seth Graves will bring experience and leadership to the outfield as well.  Junior Hank Paden will also play an important role defensively with the athletic ability to play any position including catch.
