Brent Todys, C, Westerville North, Class of 2016

PBR: Why did you choose Mount Vernon Nazerene?

Todys: I choose Mount Vernon Nazerene for a handful of reasons. One being they were so welcoming, they expressed a lot of interest right off the bat, making me feel wanted. I like the small campus because it will give me a better opportunity to receive better grades; I will be a name and not a number in the classroom. Lastly, the coaching staff and players were awesome. The atmosphere was outstanding, I received an offer I couldn't turn down.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Todys: I was considering Bowling Green, Wright State and Marietta. I visited BGSU and was going to visit Marietta.

PBR: Where did Coach Veale first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?

Todys: Coach Veale first saw me this summer at a tournament game in Dayton, OH. Coach Brown was the first to see me compete during the school season. He then saw me multiple times in the summer. My relationship developed quickly, getting to know coach brown very well. We kept in contact all summer and Coach Brown approached me as a long lost friend. They were probably the nicest coaches I had met in the process.

PBR: The MVNU campus is very close to home.  How much did distance play as a factor is your decision?

Todys: Distance really didn't play a role in my decision. My family and I wanted to find a place that felt like home, while also having a great opportunity to play right away as a freshman. Coach Veale and MVNU gave me this great opportunity that couldn’t go unnoticed.

PBR: What summer team do you play on and how has travel baseball helped your development as a player?

Todys: I proudly play for the Ohio Surge coached by Joe Griffith. He is hands down the best coach I have had. He puts a lot into the organization and my team, my family and I have much respect for him. The Surge played a big role in my development because Coach Griffith was always reaching out to coaches for me. Our winter is always a grind, Coach G. always comes to practice with a plan and we get it done. It’s a big family and that plays a big part of our success and us getting guys committed to the right places.
PBR: Now that you have you decision out of the way, what are your personal and team goals for next spring?

Todys: Nothing will change for me. I have had my goals for a long time: Get better as a player and person. If my teammates and I can achieve that, then the awards and winning will eventually come. We just have to keep our heads from getting too big and stay humble, and good things will come.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Todys: The few people who have had the biggest impact on me as a baseball player are hands down my parents, they work day and night for my brother and I to have the opportunities that we get. Next, Coach Griffith who has done a lot of the dirty work in my recruiting process. Lastly, Chris Wallace, who built me into the Catcher I am today, he polished me into a great ball player and I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to do so.

PBR: What were your stats last spring?

Todys: AB-97... H-40... 2B-14... 3B-2... HR-1... RBI-10... AVG- .412... F%- 1.0

PBR: Who is the best pitcher that you have ever faced?

Todys: The best pitcher I’ve ever faced is Gavin Lyon. I went 1-3 off of him during the spring season. Once you see his offspeed, it's nearly impossible to hit him. His stats will prove it.
