Alabama HS Team Preview: Madison County Tigers

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Madison County Tigers return a solid amount of production this spring both at the plate and on the mound from last year's team and have aspirations of another strong season. Last spring, they unfortunately missed the Class 4A playoffs being the odd one out in a tough five-team area. This year, they'll once again compete against Randolph, St. John Paul II Catholic, Wesminster Christian, and New Hope for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the season.

The Tigers started off the season very hot with a 9-2 record, but ultimately finished in third place in their area behind Westminster Christian and St. John Paul II. This year, however, it looks like Madison County once again will have the talent to be very competitive and a playoff threat in Class 4A with five positional starters and four pitchers returning who all saw time last spring. SS/RHP Jake Thornton (Calhoun CC, 2024) is one of a few starters that has played a role for the Tigers at the varsity level since their freshman year. The senior was second on the team in batting average last spring and should be the ace of their pitching staff this year. UTL/RHP Nicholas Sharp (2024) is another returner, like Thornton, who has contributed either at the plate or on the mound since his freshman campaign. The uncommitted senior is a do-it-all player that can play virtually anywhere defensively and should add more innings on the mound this spring in additon to hitting in the middle of their order. Coming off a strong sophomore campaign, INF Memphis Scott (2025) will look one-up his performance from last year where he led the team in batting average at .420 and earned 2nd Team All-State honors. He's a middle-of-the-order left-handed bat with pop to all fields. OF/RHP Brody Moon (2024) and OF/RHP Chris Fearnside (2024) are a pair of two-way players that should provide valuable contributions both at the plate and on the mound this spring.

In order for Madison County to reach the type of success they hope for this spring, they'll need some younger players to slide into larger roles left by seniors from last year's team that graduated. INF/RHP Connor Drake (2026) will look for his role to expand this spring after playing a good bit on varsity last year, while C/RHP Cole Mullins (2026) has a chance to see some playing time behind the plate. OF/LHP Jace Duckett (2027) is a freshman that actually pitched on varsity last spring as an eighth-grader, and he'll look to add more innings this year and get playing time at one of the outfield spots. After missing out on the playoffs a season and with plenty of those players returning, the Tigers will be eager to lace them up this spring and make it back to the Class 4A playoffs in 2024.
