St. Joes 11 -  Canisius 3

In their first meeting of the year the top two teams in the Monsignor Martin this year squared off and the Marauders who began the year as the would be underdog in this game proved to be far from it.  St. Joes controlled this game from first pitch to last.  Junior RHP Will Frank toed the rubber for St. Joes opposite Jr. RHP Nate Mascellino of Canisius.  Frank dominated throwing a complete game, 95 pitches, striking out 5 and walking none.  Frank showed good command of both his fast ball and sharp curve.  Mascellino, a junior with a good frame and some upside threw better than a stat line would show but due to some timely hitting by the Marauders, some good small ball, and some defensive mishaps on Canisius part, he was unable to keep St. Joes off the board.

In the top of the first Junior Outfielder Garrett Baugher led off the game with an infield single showing plus speed which he used to steal second.  Derek Penman then singled him in.  After swiping second and then taking third, Penman was able to score on an infield single from David Archer.  In the 4th Senior Towson commit Richard Miller singled and then scored on an RBI double by Jr. Jordan Kowalski.  Going into the fifth with a 1 run lead St. Joes sought to open it up.  With two on Garrett Baugher drove a double to the right center gap scoring two; a throwing error brought him across as well giving the Marauders a 5-1 lead.  After single, stolen bag, and another passed ball Penman scored to make it 6-1 after 5.  In the bottom half, Jr. Vinny Chiarenza scored on a deep double from Monmouth commit Dan Dallas deep to left.  However Canisius was unable to string much more together.  Joe's put together a huge 6th led off by Matt Ruggiero's single.  Soon after this Baugher drove in yet another run on a bases loaded line drive single to left.  Will Frank helped his own cause by following with an RBI single of his own.

Don't let the score fool you though, Canisius is still a very strong team with a deep lineup.  A strong outing from Frank and some great timely hitting made this a much more lopsided game than one may think from the outside looking in.  These two teams will give each other fits through the Catholic League playoffs in the coming weeks.  Luckily for Canisius they don't have to wait long for a rematch.  These two are set to square off yet again tomorrow afternoon at St. Joes.  Both of these teams have shown to be two of the top in the Buffalo area.
