Hamburg 4 - Starpoint 3

Now that the sun has begun to shine on Buffalo some local baseball talent is able to really show what they’ve got without dealing with the elements of cold weather, rain and snow.  Starpoint traveled to Hamburg today for a Class A division game.  Hamburg came out on top thanks to a late rally and walk off single by junior Ryan Dils.

On the mound Senior RHP, Jake Mertowski took the ball for Hamburg while Sophomore RHP Joe Chenez got the nod for Starpoint.  Though Mertowski got roughed up a bit early giving up 3 in the first three innings he showed good command of all his pitches.  Mertowski is an athletic pitcher who relies heavily on a solid breaking ball that has great movement and location.  Chenez showed a lot of upside for a young pitcher.  The sophomore righty was able to keep a strong hitting lineup for the Bulldogs off balance giving up only 1 run in 5 innings of work before junior Matt Cross came in to finish the game.

Starpoint got off to a good start when Senior Brett Guay ripped an RBI single up the middle in the top of the 1st for the first run of the game.  In the third Guay tallied his second hit of the day followed by another single by senior Will Pack.  Sophomore Joe Chenez helped his own cause by lacing a 2 RBI double deep in the gap.  After the second inning however the bats went cold for Starpoint and they were unable to plate any more runs.  Ben Walters was able to rip a double in the 4th to try to light a spark but was left stranded.  Hamburg Senior Catcher David Edie smoked an opposite field triple and was then driven in on an RBI single by Junior Griff Demayo.

Heading into the bottom of the 6th the Bulldogs were down 3-1.  Jake Mertowski and Junior Shortstop Austin O’Shei led the inning off with back to back singles before being sacrificed over by Cameron Ringo.  David Edie then knocked one in on a SAC fly to cut the lead to one.  In the bottom of the 7th senior Tosh Johnson came through with the game tying RBI before being knocked in on a walk off single by junior Ryan Dils.  The final run was scored with the infield up, Ryan Dils ripped a chopper through the infield to win the game for the Bulldogs.

A few performances worth noting from the day were Junior Griff Demayo who had 8 put outs from 3rd base while also driving in a key run early in the game.  Junior Matt Cross showed his versatility for Starpoint.  The junior started in left field and was then called upon in a tough situation to come in and pitch the final two innings.  Cross, a standout catcher usually, showed some velocity and command on the mound as well.
