Class of 2021 Boasts Impressive Crop Of Shortstops

2021 prospects join the upperclass this year and with that comes more attention and focus from scouts and colleges coaches alike. As we slowly begin to look ahead at what Ontario’s identity might look like when next June’s draft rolls around, there’s one thing that stands out when looking at the top of the class... shortstops.

Two of the top three prospects man the 6 spot on the infield, both of which are uncommitted, as well four of the top nine. Elijha Hammill (No. 2), Core Jackson, (No. 3) and Brando Leroux (No. 9) remain uncommitted while Mason Dobie (No. 7) committed to the University of Dayton this fall.

The athleticism jumps out right away from all four which has allowed them to establish themselves atop the positional rankings. We’ve seen two of them, Hammill and Dobie, up close at this year’s Future Games and also got a look at the entire group at September’s T12.

You’ll likely hear these names several more times over the next two years so let’s take a closer look at the elite crop of middle-infielders in the class of 2021.

Elijha Hammill SS / 2B / Holy Trinity, ON / 2021

Report: Hammill impressed across several levels this past summer including his time with the Canadian Junior National Team where he was the team’s youngest player. He went 4-for-14 with a home run, double and four walks in his second trip against pro pitching. He showed patience at the dish as well as some juice in his bat but his speed is what helps set him apart, running a 6.59 at the Future Games in August. Hammill’s speed and patience were on full display at T12 where despite going just 2-for-8, he was able to add seven walks and six stolen bases. Gamechanger and quiet leader on the field with tools across the board.
