2024 Team Preview: Georgetown Eagles

Prep Baseball Texas Staff

The 2024 Texas high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week and updating the Power 30 rankings.

TEAM OUTLOOK

After finishing the 2023 season as 5A Regional Quarterfinalists, the Georgetown Eagles and Coach Jordon Vierra bring back a solid senior class for 2024. This senior group will lead a team that aims to be known for their defense and pitching this season.

Headlining the senior class for Georgetown is the recent Oklahoma signee, INF/OF Ryley Leininger, who is currently ranked No. 70 in the state. Leininger has some serious bat speed and pop from the left side, evidenced by the 101.7 mph max exit velocity and 71.6 mph avg. bat speed he put up at last summer’s Central Texas Summer Open. Leininger also showed at the same event that he has plenty of arm strength (88 mph) to stick at the hot corner at the next level. Likely to join Leininger in the infield in 2024 for the Eagles is UTL Talan Ball (2024; uncommitted). In the outfield, the Eagles are projected to be led by a trio of uncommitted seniors in OF Devin Peterson, OF/LHP Andrew Nations, and OF Jackson Rainey.

The pitching side of things for the Eagles looks to be in good hands with recent Redlands CC commit returning in RHP Cooper Ashby (2024). Ashby is a sidearmer that ran his fastball up to 80 mph this past August at the South Texas Senior Games, and complements his fastball with an additional three pitches. A junior arm to keep an eye on for Georgetown is LHP/UTL David Fluitt (uncommitted), who is another two-way player for the Eagles.

With the veteran pieces they bring back on the defensive side, look for the Georgetown Eagles to be in the 5A playoffs again in 2024.
