GREEN BAY, WI – Notre Dame advanced to the Division 2 sectionals for the fifth consecutive year with a thrilling 3-2 win over Seymour in the regional finals on Friday.

It was a matchup of the top two seeds in the regional. Notre Dame came in with a record of 16-10, while Seymour was 11-11.

Notre Dame opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning. Leadoff man Davis Elm drew a walk, stole both second and third base, and then was driven in by an RBI single by Connor Yakel.

The Tritons struck once more in the bottom of the 3rd. Again, Elm started things off by leading off the inning with a double. Sean Green promptly brought him around to score with an RBI single in the next at bat.

The game hit a bit of a lull until the final couple of innings. Pitching dominated, as both Seymour starter Reed Blake and Elm shut down the opposing team with relative ease.

Notre Dame loaded the bases in the bottom of the 6th looking for an insurance run, but Blake came up with a clutch strikeout to escape the jam.

Down to their final three outs of the season and trailing by two runs in the top of the 7th, Seymour put their rally caps on. Elm had only given up three hits to that point in the game, but the Thunder managed to apply serious pressure in the final inning. A base hit and an error gave them runners on first and second with one out, and Ryan Peterson hit an RBI single to cut the lead to one run. In the next at bat, Justin Krull singled to right field to tie the game up at 2. Freshman John Zacharias pitched out of the jam and kept the game tied heading to the bottom of the 7th.

In the Tritons’ half of the inning, Nick Martzahl led off with a single to center field. He stole second and Elm drew a walk to put men on first and second with nobody out. Green came to the plate and knocked a ground ball past the drawn-in infield to score the winning run and clinch the regional title.

Elm pitched 6.2 innings for Notre Dame and struck out eight, scattered five hits, and gave up no earned runs. Blake went 6 innings for Seymour and struck out six, walked four, and gave up three earned runs. Zacharias was the winning pitcher, while Blake took the loss.

Martzahl and Green paced the Tritons offensively. They both collected two hits and Green finished with 2 RBI. Elm drew three walks in the game and stole two bases. Krull did most of the damage for Seymour. He went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The Tritons will face Mosinee in the sectional semifinals in Chilton on Tuesday at 10 AM. It’s the third straight year that the two will play in the semifinals. Notre Dame won the last two meetings against the Indians. The other teams to reach the Chilton sectional are Denmark and Freedom, who will play at 1 PM.
