Updated Illinois Power 25 Team Rankings

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

This is the second installment of the Power 25 Rankings update. The weather still did not cooperate in week 3 and many of the games throughout the state were cancelled because of it. As a result, the movement in the Power 25 was limited but we still saw some movement, especially within the Top 10.

Below is a look at last week's IHSA action:

UPDATED TOP 5

CLIMBING

+ Mount Carmel - The Caravan officially settled in back home after their spring trip to the NHSI and now sit at No. 3 after a 2-0 week. The Mount Carmel offense scored 34 runs in their two-game sweep of De La Salle.

+ Lincoln-Way East - The Griffins are now 9-1 on the year and up to No. 4 in the Power 25 after a 2-0 week. Lincoln-Way East had a convincing 9-4 win over No. 13 Andrew last week amd also knocked of Hersey 9-1.

+ St. Laurence - The Vikings climbed one spot in the Power 25 after going 2-1 on the week. In their two wins on the week, St. Laurence outscored opponents 30-1. St. Laurence suffered their first loss of the year, losing to No. 13 Andrew by the score of 8-5. St. Laurence is now 10-1 on the season.

+ Brother Rice - The Crusaders have played one of the toughest schedules in the state and climbed one spot despite going 2-2 on the week. Brother Rice’s biggest win of the week was a 13-3 drubbing of No. 8 Joliet Catholic. The Crusaders two losses (5-4 and 2-1) came to St. Xavier, one of the top programs in the state of Kentucky.

+ Providence Catholic - The Celtics only played one game on the week but made the most of it, defeating No. 5 Plainfield North by the score of 3-2.

+ St. Viator - The Lions knocked off two teams from Wisconsin 10-1 and 18-2 en-route to their 3-0 week. The Lions also shut out Elk Grove by the score of 2-0. Senior RHP Bryce Hellgeth twirled a one-hitter in six innings of work and struck out eight in the win.

LEAKING

+ No. 5 Plainfield North and No. 8 Joliet Catholic only played one game on the week and both against Power 25 opponents. Plainfield North lost a 3-2 affair against No. 21 Providence Catholic and the Hilltoppers of Joliet Catholic lost to No. 7 Brother Rice 13-3.

NEW TO THE TOP 25

+ With such limited action on the week no team made a big enough statement to warrant a move into the Power 25. The forecast for this week looks promising and there should be a lot of action to discuss in next week’s update.
