ROCKY RIVER - “This is all new to me” is what Josh Mommers had to say about his recruiting process since Aug. 1.

“I’ve had a lot of texts and emails,” related the Rocky River High School junior, who has also attended camps at Dayton, Marshall, Ball State and Kent State. “I’m learning how programs run. It takes a lot to get there. I’ve been talking to the players to see how colleges work. It’s interesting to hear the perspective of the players.”

It has only added to the drive to play college baseball for the top-rated 2025 second baseman in Ohio.

“Since I picked up a bat I fell in love with the sport,” Mommers said.

Along with his devotion to the game, there is a lot that the 17-year-old believes he can bring to a program at the next level.

“I’m a hard worker and give 100 percent,” Mommers noted. “Baseball is my lifestyle. I’m athletic, a good listener and can do everything they want. I can fill in wherever you want me to play.”

Prep Baseball Ohio Director of Scouting Kyle Weldon sees a lot to like about Mommers.

“A two-time TPG guy, Josh has a lot of traits you expect to see in a college hitter,” Weldon explained. “His bat speed averages in the mid-70s and his exit velocity is up to 97. Plus, he’s an infielder hitting from the left side which right away improves his stock. I’m excited to see where he ends up.”

The 47th-ranked junior in the state continues to make strides in his game.

“Left-handed hitting infielders are liked by colleges, so I’ve really been working hard to be a smooth infielder,” Mommers related. “I’m mastering stuff, doing things every day, working on being a consistent hitter, getting in the weight room, I like to do that. You can’t take days off.”

Being rated by Prep Baseball is also helping the cause.

“I’m able to use the rankings to show what I can do,” Mommers said. “I’ve worked hard to earn that rating and I know I can be a good fit for a program.”

So what type of player is the 5-11 182-pounder?

“I love the game and I’m very focused when I’m playing,” noted Mommers, who hits at or near the top of the order for both his high school and summer teams. “I try my best to hide my emotions and stay away from distractions.”

A safety on a conference championship team in football this past fall, Mommers has an idea of what he’s looking for in a school.

“I’d love for a college team to be like a family,” Mommers explained. “I want to be surrounded by good teammates and coaches, and go where I can develop.

“I’d like to stay relatively close to home, not too far away,” added Mommers. “I’d also like a coach with some experience that I know I can trust.”

Uncertain of a college major at this time, the 14th-rated uncommitted 2025 in Ohio knows how vital the upcoming months will be in the recruiting process.

“The camps have really been important and I also have the T3 Scout Day ahead to get my numbers up,” Mommers said. “I want to get as big, strong and fast as possible for the summer. Hopefully by the end of summer I’ll commit. That would be most ideal.”
