Sophomore Standouts: Apr. 9, 2017

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

As we continue to work through baseball season, I want to highlight a few sophomores that are having a nice year and will impact their team’s conference race down the home stretch.

Zane Cox, RHP/MIF, Dierks High School
Cox is a 5-foot-10 right-hander with an athletic build and frame. He pitches from an H ¾ arm slot with a short quick arm. He does a sound job repeating his simple delivery with a distinct balance point. He finishes with extension to home plate. His fastball works 82-84 mph with late life through the strike zone. He compliments his fastball with an 12/6 curveball with late break thrown 71-73 mph. He also throws a change up 72-74 mph with fastball arm speed and arm side run. Cox is an athletic right-hander with a quick clean arm and a feel to pitch

Cox is 4-0 this spring for the Outlaws as they have been one of the elite 1A teams, they look to be one of the challengers for the 1A State Title.

McKaden Templeton, RHP, Rogers High School
Templeton is a 5-foot-10 155-pound right-hander with an athletic frame and build. He pitches from an H ¾ arm slot with a quick arm speed. He maintains rhythm and balance throughout his simple delivery, which allows him to command the strike zone on a consistent basis. His fastball works 81-83 mph with slight run, he has been as high as 84 mph. He compliments his fastball with an 11/5 curveball thrown 70-72 mph and a change thrown with near fastball arm speed at 71-73 mph. Overall Templeton is a solid athlete with advanced pitch ability.

Templeton has a 1.44 ERA in 34 innings pitched with 31 strike outs and has picked up 2 wins for the Mounties this spring, as they battle for a play off spot.

Brandon Ulmer, OF/INF/RHP, Booneville High School
Ulmer is a 5-foot-9 160-pound outfielder with a slight frame and an athletic build. Offensively he starts from an athletic stance, he uses a minimum load and stride. He uses a line drive swing, and works primarily to the pull side. He manipulates the barrel well enough to keep it in the hit zone for an extended period of time. He stays balanced through extension and gets down the line well running a 3.89 home to first. Defensively, he works through the baseball with fluid footwork. He throws the ball accurately using H ¾ arm slot and a loose arm. He throws the ball 79 mph from the outfield. Overall Ulmer is a premium athlete with a feel for the game, time will tell as he physically matures on his ceiling.

Ulmer is hitting .410 with 25 hits in 61 at bats with 7 doubles 3 triples and 2 home runs.
