The WIAA season officially kicked off Tuesday, Mar. 26 and in typical Wisconsin fashion, the weather during the Opening Week of the WIAA season was less-than-satisfactory, causing a number of games to be canceled or postponed. A number of teams did travel to warmer parts of the country to kick off their season, and there was still some action across the state. With that, a majority of teams in the state have yet to get their first taste of action in the 2024 season, so we will wait to officially update our Power 25 until all teams have compiled enough games to get a fair assessment.

Today we will be checking in on how the Power 25 teams fared in their games of the week while also looking at some of the teams that have gotten off to strong starts and are ones to keep on eye on as the season progresses.

POWER 25

+ No. 2 Kettle Moraine (2-1): The Lasers enjoyed a successful trip down to Tennessee and head back to the Badger State with a 2-1 record. INF JJ Wolbert (2024; Madison JC) has been an early standout for them thus far, as he is hitting to a .455 average and has maintained a .548 on-base percentage too. He also has driven three runs while scoring six from the leadoff spot and has also swiped two bags. INF Layson Fabisiak (2024) and 3B/OF Scott Brown (2024) have also been some big contributors in the heart of Kettle Moraine’s order, with Fabisiak hitting to a .400 clip and Brown .364 respectively. RHP Kaiden Ascher (2024) has limited opponents to four earned runs in his team high 7.1 innings of work and has helped Kettle Moraine to one win. Both RHP Tate Robillard (2025) and LHP Andrew Ishag (2025) have held the opposition relatively quiet in their four innings apiece, with Ishag already earning one win this season. After their trip down south, Kettle Moraine now looks forward to facing in-state competition, starting with a non-conference bout against Hartford on Thursday.

+ No. 3 Union Grove (2-1): Traveling down to Southern Illinois to kick off their 2024 campaign, Union Grove came out with a pair of wins in loss against some quality talent from the area. RHP/OF Marshall Loch (2024; Southern Indiana) has certainly been a big contributor in the early part of the season on both sides of the ball. He already has blasted a pair of home runs this season and has yet to allow a run in his 2.1 innings of work on the mound. On the mound, RHP Landon Dessart (2024; Madison JC) put together a quality outing in his first start of the year, allowing just one earned run and punching out five across 4.1 innings. Names like C Hayden Jamison (2024; College of Lake County), INF Jude Rogowski (2026), and INF Hudson Dresen (2024) have been a few other early contributors for the Broncos this season. They kick off their in-state competition with a non-conference matchup with a quality Indian Trail squad.

+ No. 5 Monona Grove (2-1): Also making a trip to Tennessee for their first part of the season, Monona Grove showed some early signs of life. After losing their first one of the week, the Silver Eagles battled for a 9-7 win, highlighted by a 4-for-4 performance from INF/RHP Cal Moreau (2026), which included a home run and one RBI. Also in the win, OF Nicholas Guidici (2024; Parkland College), one of this team’s senior leaders, also homered while driving in three runs. Their most electric matchup came against Collierville, who is one of the top squads in Tennessee. In that one, the aforementioned Moreau shined, as he smoked two more home runs for Monona Grove, one of which was a walk-off. He also was dominant on the mound, tallying five punch outs in five innings while limiting Collierville to just two runs. Both C/RHP Terek Verhage (2024; University of St. Thomas) and INF/RHP Kaden Connor (2025; Xavier) have made some big contributions on both sides of the ball thus far and look for them to continue that trend throughout the season.

+ No. 11 Bay Port (1-2): Making the trip to Florida to take on a number of Tampa-area schools, Bay Port wavered slightly, but ended up tallying their first win of the year. On the last day of their trip, the Pirates took home the win, highlighted by a quality outing from RHP Parker Lawson (2026) who allowed three runs on four hits in his start. Offensively, OF/INF Carter Kallies (2024; Wisconsin-La Crosse) has enjoyed a successful start to the season, highlighted by a 3-for-5 performance in their only win of the week. RHP/INF Keagen Wheeler (2025) has been an early two-way contributor and he already has one home run under his belt, too. Despite being tasked with the loss, RHP Craig Kabat (2024; Gonzaga) put together a quality outing to start the season but was not helped by some unfortunate errors and he has also contributed offensively so far. To be expected this early into the season, Bay Port still seems to be knocking some dust off, but after a quality win to end their trip, they head back to Wisconsin with a full head of steam.

+ No. 12 St. Thomas More (1-0): The Cavaliers stayed home for their only game of the week, as they took down Catholic Memorial in dominant fashion. RHP/C Samuel Mommer (2024; Wisconsin-Parkside) did it all for St. Thomas More in that one as he blasted a grand slam to kick off his season and finished with a whopping six RBIs. He also earned the win on the mound, fanning 11 CMH batters and scattered just one hit in his four innings of work. RHP Manuel Sostre (2025) also saw his name called early on into the season, as he came in for the final three innings and allowed just one run while striking out three. Both INF/RHP Kyle Alivo (2024; Iowa) and INF Brayden Alivo (2026) made some offensive contributions in their lone game of the week, too. They now travel to our LakePoint campus in Emerson, Georgia, to take on a couple of out of state opponents.

+ No. 15 Mosinee (2-1): Was the final Power 25 team that made a multi-day trip down south and like many other teams they are off to a 2-1 start. Getting their year started on the mound was RHP Garrett Shupe (2024; North Dakota State), who put together four-quality innings of work, striking out three and allowing just one. INF/RHP Keagen Jirschele (2024; South Dakota State) and OF/RHP Taylor Lemanski (2024; Wisconsin-La Crosse) have been a pair of early producers for the Mosinee offense, while both have also seen some quality innings on the mound, too. Other offensive contributors thus far have been C Gavin Obremski (2024; Rock Valley JC), CIF Brady Lokken (2025), and CIF Cameron Ziebell (2024; Wisconsin-Stout).

+ No. 19 Notre Dame Academy (0-1): In their lone game of the week, the Tritons fell to a talented Joliet Catholic Academy squad that is currently ranked No. 2 in Prep Baseball Illinois’ Power 25. Despite facing some high-octane arms, the Tritons still managed to put up seven runs, highlighted by a 2-for-3 day from OF Emmett Hunter (2024) who drove in a team high three runs. C Brady Laviolette (2024; Ohio) also enjoyed a multi-hit performance and drove in one run in the process, too. Unfortunate weather has canceled their first WIAA matchup of the season, so they now look to a Tuesday matchup with Shawano.

+ No. 23 Pewaukee (1-0): The Pirates were the only other Power 25 team that took on an in-state foe in the first week of action, defeating Merrill in a narrow contest. RHP Owen Dobberstein (2025) was dominant in this three-inning start, striking out five and holding Merrill scoreless while also collecting a hit in the game, too.. On the offensive end, both OF Logan Peterson (2027) and 1B Landon Witek (2025) each logged their first varsity hits, and C Jackon Servais (2025) doubled in the matchup also. The Pirates continue their 2024 campaign with a home matchup versus Columbus on Wednesday, April 3rd.

STARTING OFF STRONG

+ Jefferson (3-1): The Eagles hit the ground running to start the spring, earning three wins in their first four games of the year. INF/RHP Aidan Kammer (2024; Edgewood College) has been a key piece in the offensive effort for Jefferson, as he is hitting to a tune of .615 which has included five doubles already and three RBIs. RHP/1B Tyler Fredrick (2024; Carroll University) has logged a hit in half of his at-bats so far, while also driving in three RBIs himself. OF Sam Steies (2025), CIF Caysen Miller (2024), and 1B/OF/RHP Tyler Schroedl (2024) are all each batting over .300, and have been big pieces in the Eagles success thus far. On the mound, both Schroedl and Fredrick have yet to allow an earned run in their seven innings apiece. RHP/OF Brady Vogel (2024), the aforementioned Kammer, and RHP/INF Bentley Wagner (2026) each have seen some quality time on the mound, too.

+ Janesville Craig (1-0): The Cougars were able to dodge the poor weather early on in the 2024 season and snuck in a game against Fort Atkinson in a non-conference battle in southern Wisconsin. Janesville Craig carried their momentum from last season, as head coach Josh Shere and the Cougars wrapped up a solid 10-0 win to get the ball rolling in 2024.

+ Badger (1-0): The Badgers won in dramatic fashion to start their 2024 campaign—earning a walk-off win via an RBI single from INF/RHP Riley Lussmyer (2025) to take down Fort Atkinson after eight innings of play. Badger received contributions from multiple prospects in just their first game of the year—including multi-hit performances from UTL Wade Blakeley (2024) and OF Matthew O’Grady (2026). The offense remained hot throughout a majority of the game, as the Badgers erased a three-run deficit in the final three frames. OF/RHP Sam Polyock (2024; Wisconsin-Whitewater) was the star with a 4-for-5 performance to provide a spark for Badger in their lone game of the season to date.

+ Marquette University (1-0): The Hilltoppers took care of business on opening night with a dominant 16-5 victory over Dominican in run-rule fashion to jumpstart their 2024 season. The combination of OF Joey Halser (2024; Wisconsin-Stevens Point) and INF Jonah Borchardt (2025) each provided a home run to spark the Marquette University offense in the win. The Hilltoppers earned nine hits in the matchup, and now look to facing a conference opponent in Brookfield East on Apr. 9.

+ Watertown (2-0): The Goslings flew south for two games down in Florida, and won both with a solid combination of offense and pitching. After a steady outing from RHP Eliot Roethle (2025), Watertown used their bullpen and an early lead to push past IC Catholic Prep (IL). C Calvin Hurtgen (2025) and OF/LHP Jacob Hurtgen (2025) combined for five hits in the matchup from the top of the order. The Goslings were more of the same on day two of live action—grinding out a close victory over Baldwinsville (NY) to sweep their competition in the Sunshine State.

+ West Bend East (1-0): The Suns were able to sneak in a game this past week by taking on Ripon in a non-conference matchup. The bats were hot for head coach Zack Fountain and his squad, as West Bend East tallied nine hits in an 11-1 run-rule win. SS Mason Roell (2024), a winner from 2023, was 3-for-4 to pace the Suns’ offense in this one. OF Cutler Schmidt (2024) and OF Kaleb Schepp (2024) provided four total hits from the top of the order for West Bend East—including two doubles from Schmidt and two triples from Schepp. Behind a strong start from RHP/UTL Victor Gurrola (2024), the Suns went on to secure their first victory of the season before taking on three more non-conference opponents this week.
