Scout Notes: Charlotte MegaStars Winter Workouts

Brandon Hall
Mid-Atlantic Scouting Director

Prep Baseball was on hand in Pineville, NC at the On Deck Baseball Academy for a workout with the Charlotte MegaStars.  The MegaStars brought in their high school age players to get to know their coaching staff, and get a chance to workout and key in on their fundamental development.  After a brief introduction period, players were split up by positions.  Each position coach spent time with his position's players, going through footwork, exchanges, and releases. The workout was efficient and players were expected to keep up with a fast pace set by each positional coaches energy.

Following the defensive work, players went through offensive rotations that included time in short cages with some one-on-one mentoring, an agility workout, and swings in the big cage, seeing the ball fly off the bat. Again the workout was very efficient with each player getting a ton of swings, while still working on their strengths, and addressing their weaknesses.

Below are some notes from the workout. The Prep Baseball Scouting staff is excited to see several of the MegaStar players at upcoming Preseason All-State events, as well as following them throughout the spring season.

Pitcher Notes

Zach Cartrette, RHP, Chatham Central HS, 2025
6-foot-3, 180 pound righty has impressed Prep Baseball Scouts in the past with his ability to attack a hitter's weakness.  In this early season bullpen, his command was already dialed in.  Cartrette works with a tall base through balance, using an average kick, while staying level and on-line.  The efficient delivery has good ryhthm and good direction.  Featured the ability to throw his fastball to both sides of the plate.

Erwing Soza, RHP, Highland Tech, 2026
Soza has added weight to his 6-foot-1 frame, now listed at 185 pounds. Athleticism is present.  Clean arm action.  There is arm strength. Worked in this early season bullpen to fine tune his timing and rhythm and get his back side to active a little sooner.  The right hander worked in some big situations as a freshman and should be in line to move Highland Tech forward in 2024.

Nick Russo, RHP, Weddington HS, 2025
Strong frame at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds. Looks to have added strength to the frame.  Quick arm from a short arm action that loads the scapular with natural athleticism.  Early season bullpen and still working to find rhythm between his upper and lower half.  When it is synced the ball jumps out of the hand.  Should be a solid follow into the spring.

Hitter Notes

Spencer Roe, 3B, Marvin Ridge HS, 2026
Right handed hitter has strength in his lower half, standing at 6-foot, 190 pounds. Stays in his base with a small load and minimal movement.  Steady head. Natural loft through contact. Showed off excellent barrel feel.  Has strength at contact. Our first look at him and we will be working to get a full report at some point this spring.

Jacob Addison, 3B, East Mecklenburg HS, 2026
6-foot, 203 pounds. Broad shoulders. Defined strength apparent. Right handed hitter.  Flat through the zone with a line drive approach.  Solid barrel feel.  Balls on the barrel rocketed through the cage.  Advanced bat speed with stability through the swing and finish. Interesting to see the swing play at game speed in the near future.
