Okotoks Dawgs Scout Day - Quick Hits

Brady Turner
West Coast Director

On Wednesday, March 27th the Prep Baseball Alberta staff hosted the Okotoks Dawgs Scout Day at Dunvernay Fieldhouse in Okotoks, Alberta. It gave players the opportunity to collect updated metrics via our tech partner TrackMan.

We broke down the top measurable data performers from the event with our Stat Leaders article. Now, we move onto this Quick Hits article as we provide scouting notes and video on five standouts from the event.

Max Poirier RHP / 1B / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2025

Poirier has made plenty of noise since he joined the Okotoks Dawgs. The BC native stands at 6-foot-4, 160-pounds and has plenty of upside. The arm is loose and whippy and he has a very low-effort delivery. The fastball sits in the 87 - 88 mph range, topping out at 89 mph. It has over 15 inches of HB and pairs well with his slider. It profiles more like a cutter at the moment, but works along that same horizontal plane as the fastball and is still an effective pitch. The sky is the limit for Poirier, with plenty of room to add strength and velocity. He will continue to have eyes on him as one of the top uncommitted arms in the country.

Quincy Jenkins SS / 2B / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2025

The true 2025, reclassed 2026, is one of the most athletically gifted players on the West Coast, and shows it on both sides of the ball. On the defensive side, he moves well laterally and his athleticism allows him to get into a throwing position efficiently and make those tough throws with his arm utility. At the dish, there’s plenty of bat speed and present bat-to-ball. He worked on a line up the middle and to both gaps, reaching a max exit velocity of 94 mph. The uncommitted middle infielder will be one to follow when the 2024 summer season kicks off.

Benito Bonilla 1B / RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy , AB / 2024

Bonilla is one of the most physical players in the 2024 class in the country, and that was evident at the Dawgs Scout Day. With an imposing 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame, he looks to do damage at the dish. He worked in the air up the middle and to his backside gap, reaching a max exit velocity of 104 mph. All 18 of his batted balls were 91+ mph off the bat, and 8 of them were north of 101 mph. The Missouri State commit and Canadian JNT member was one of the most feared hitters in Alberta last year, and he will look to do much of the same this coming season.

Michael Yusypchuk RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2024

Yusypchuk has been widely known as one of the best pitchers in the country for the last couple years. The Canadian JNT member really impressed at the Dawgs Scout Day. His ability to spin the baseball and locate his 4-pitch mix for strikes is what really stood out. The fastball sat 91-92 mph and spun it north of 2300 rpm. He does a good job killing induced vertical break on the changeup making it an effective swing & miss offering. The cutter sits 86-87 mph averaging 2490 rpm. It's not often you see a high schooler spin a breaking ball 2900+ rpm, but Yusypchuk does just that with his curveball. It has two-plane break which plays well off his fastball and cutter. The Missouri State commit will look to lead a very talented Dawgs pitching staff in 2024.

William Labonte RHP / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2025

The 2023 Future Games alumni continues to impress on the mound everytime we see him. What stands out for the Arizona State commit is his ability to locate all 4 of his pitches for strikes. With an athletic look and a quick arm, the fastball sits 89-91 mph, tunneling a changeup off of it, while adding arm side run and depth to it. Labonte has also shown the ability to create in-zone swing & miss off of his cutter and slider. The cutter sits 83-84 mph while the slider has over 2500 rpm and has tight, late break. Labonte is one of the top 2025 arms in the country and a member of the Junior National Team.
