Q & A with Henderson State Commit Jackson Martin

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Coming off a solid junior season in which he helped Smackover advance to the 3A state Semi-finals, RHP/INF Jackson Martin recently announced his commitment to the Henderson State University.

We had a chance to visit with Martin regarding his decision and several other topics:

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose Henderson State University?

Martin: I absolutely loved the campus and atmosphere. Arkadelphia also isn't too far from Smackover which worked out well. Also, I wanted to not only play baseball in college, but also receive a good education. I knew that the major that I intend on pursuing was one of the top majors at Henderson.

PBR: Where did they first see you compete?

Martin: The coaches had attended many high school games in past years but they really saw me for recruiting purposes from my field level account.

PBR:  When did you take your first official visit Henderson State University?

Martin: I took my first visit to Henderson State on September 25, 2014

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Martin: Ultimately, they want me to get in the system and get bigger and faster. They'll have a lot graduating and a lot of spots to fill when I come in so we will just have to wait and see how everything works out.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Martin: Harding, UAM, Delta State, Connors State

PBR: Who did you play for this summer? Talk about your experience playing for them?

Martin: I was not able to play for anyone this summer due to elbow surgery in June. I worked very hard in therapy and started my throwing program 3 months prior to my surgery date. By that time, summer ball was well over.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Martin: Many might answer this question with a coach's name or their dad's name but I would have to say my teammates. I am fortunate to be a part of a very talented and competitive baseball team that has pushed me as an individual to be the best player I can possibly be.

PBR: What were your stats for your High School last spring?

Martin: I batted .357 with an OBP of .462 and 13 RBIs, 1 HR. I had 43 runs scored and 28 stolen bases.

PBR: Who is the toughest Pitcher you've faced in Arkansas?

Martin: I would have to say Blake Sullivan from Genoa Central. He completely dominated us in the regional championship and state championship when I was a sophomore.
