Commitment Q&A With Nebraska Signee Chase Olson

By: Diego Solares
Central Region Media Director, Area Scout

LHP Chase Olson (Raymore-Peculiar) is one of the top prospects in the state's senior class, sitting currently inside our top-20 for the 2024 class.

An athletic, loose-bodied southpaw with a clean arm, Olson earned all-conference honors for Ray-Pec this past spring season. His fastball plays in the mid-to-upper-80s, touching 88 at the National Program Invitational this past summer. Off that, Olson will spin a low-70s breaking ball with depth, and he'll show a mid-70s changeup as well.

Recently we spoke to the Nebraska signee on why he chose the Huskers, his favorite baseball memory, who his toughest opponent has been to date, and we even got a brief glimpse into Ray-Pec's upcoming season.

OUR Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Olson: I didn’t really have expectations about the recruiting process, I got a lot of my information from Andrew Olla at Building Champions. I was looking for a school that had a great coaching staff, community support and a history of winning.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Olson: It did for me and my family. We agreed that it would be easier for them to come and support if I was somewhat closer to home. I feel like Nebraska is a good distance away, where they could come up and back home in a day to see a game.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

Olson: It started my sophomore winter. I had a good freshman summer and got in the weight room consistently, got stronger, put on weight, and had a velo jump from low 80’s to 86-88. The coaches first saw me throw in a camp my freshman summer, and I kept going to camps through my junior fall. They came to see me play up in Omaha my sophomore summer and then again up at Creekside that same year.

PBR: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Olson: I like the school and the Lincoln community. They always come out to support any athletic event and make you feel like family. I feel like the coaching staff does a great job developing players and will push me to be the best I can be. The key factors were the coaching staff, my major, the Lincoln area and the ability to make an impact when I get on campus.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Olson: Kansas State, Kent State, Xavier.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

Olson: INF Grant Hollister (Blue Springs South, 2024; Indiana signee). He is a very talented player and he hits the ball to all fields. He battles in every at bat no matter the count or score and makes every at bat a competition

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Olson: I realized I had a future playing baseball my freshman year. I had a really good summer and heard from Miami that August, which gave me confidence and motivation to keep working and getting better.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Olson: Be yourself and play with confidence. Always be the hardest worker in the room and be the player your teammates look to for leadership. I believe that any opportunity to get on the field is an opportunity to prove yourself, so make the best out of it.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Olson: The most memorable moment was winning districts my sophomore year. We had a really tight group of guys and we had a great run. The dog pile after winning was the best feeling I’ve ever had in my baseball career.

PBR: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

Olson: We have a tough schedule this year with a stacked conference, but I think we will be one of the best teams in the area. We have a pitching staff that is probably one of, if not the best in the state with me along with LHP Micah Henson (2024; Kansas State signee) and LHP Johnny Carver (2026; Arkansas commit), and our bats will be solid. We have the ability to compete with anyone this year, and we hope to come out on top of districts as well as conference.
