TN HS Team Preview: Coalfield Yellow Jackets

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Coming off back-to back seasons finishing in the state tournament, the Yellow Jackets again bring back a talented group that features experience, play-making ability and consistency that should help propel them to Murfreesboro yet again come late May. It all starts with Luke Treece, who has been a reliable weapon and backstop for the club since his freshman season. Coming off a remarkable 2023 campaign that saw Treece capture the 1A Mr. Baseball award, once again Treece looks better and more capable going into his junior year. On the hill, the Yellow Jackets will have a plethora of arms to go to. Junior Levi Heidal returns from an injury and has had the most varsity experience up until this point. Waylon Burgess is a ‘26 class prospect at an athletic 6 foot 1 that offers upside on the mound. Incoming freshman and younger brother Jack Treece should provide valuable production in the backend of the rotation or in a reliever type of role. The club looks strong up the middle, while also replacing a few players that were instrumental in their state tournament runs the past two seasons. Coach Lowe returns 5 positional starters with a total of 5 arms returning for this year. Expect the team to control their district yet again with Oneida being their biggest form of competition. Winning 25+ games two years in a row has been somewhat of unprecedented success for Coalfield and look for them to continue that trend for the 2024 season with a deep run in the state tournament on their mind.

C Luke Treece: Reigning TSSAA 1A Mr. Baseball batted .538 with 20 2B’s and 8 HR’s, while plating across 64 RBI’s to a 21-3 BB-K ratio.

RHP/MIF Jackson Treece: Upper 70’s mph arm that should climb into the 80’s this season on the hill. Has produced 90+ mph exit velocities hitting with a line-dive approach.
