TN HS Team Preview: Milan Bulldogs

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Team Outlook: Milan comes into the spring ‘24 season with extremely high hopes and a bittersweet taste in its mouth after a remarkable ‘23 campaign that saw the Bulldogs win their district and regional championships before eventually losing in the state championship game to Union County. It was a tedious, edge of your seat game that saw both teams go stalemate 2-2 through 7 innings. With 2 outs in the 8th, Union County was able to scrap 6 runs across and eventually win the 2A State Championship 8-3. Looking to return to the promised land once again, the Bulldogs go into the year with 5 returning starters with a great mixture of both upperclassmen and lower classmen players. This group is led by unequivocal leader of the team and senior SS Cary Alle Burke. This is a prospect that has more power presently available to him and should be able to find a position at the next level with the glove alone as it is really pure. Back on the mound will be junior ace Colin Milligan who posted really great numbers a season ago, while also going 7+ innings in the State Championship game. On paper, having those premiere players who have played a lot of meaningful baseball games will be a huge catalyst for this year's squad. Although this team lacks pitching depth and experience, Milligan should provide invaluable leadership at that position that should trickle down to unproven arms and really could end up being a bigger strength down the stretch than previously thought. Rye Maxwell is another arm that offers mid 80’s on the fastball that was primarily used in the reliever role a season ago but could be looked upon to garner additional innings starting if he can handle the workload. This is a team that can hit for average collectively and steal bags and should be able to provide decent run support and a chance to compete in every single game, regardless of the opponent. Milan and Westview held the top two district spots last year and that looks to be the sequel, where I look for Milan to make it back to the postseason with gritty play and experience.

LHP/OF Colin Milligan

All-State 2023; .427 avg, .525 obp; 37/40 sb/sba; Also went 7-4 on the mound with a 2.32 ERA in 57 1/3 IP. Went 7+ innings as starting pitcher in the state championship game. Has a knack for getting on base and finding the barrel at the plate.

SS Cary Allen Burke

Led the team with 50 RBIs in 2023; batted .310 and stole 13 bases - will be his 3rd year as starting SS and is the unequivocal leader of this team. Participated in our PBR Scout Day this fall where the leather really flashed.

RHP/3B Rye Maxwell

Heavy fastball (85-87) and struck out 19 in 19 innings in reliever role in 2023; Also batted .310 with 2 HR and 34 RBIs in 2023; Potential power bat and power arm for 2024.

UTL Gabe Scott

.328 avg in 2023 and was 31/34 sb/sba on the bases. Big time glove all over the field, but had a .953 fld% primarily at 2b last season. Throwback player that hustles, scraps, and finds a way to impact games with his speed.

IF/RHP Will Johnson

Batted .429 with less than 20 ABs in 2023, but played a lot as starting 3B (including in the state championship game). Looking to impact both in the lineup and on the mound in 2024.

C/RHP JP Scott

After some injuries, gained a lot of experience behind the plate in 2023 late in the season. Smooth glove and arm behind the plate will be also looking to impact the lineup. Also went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA on the mound in limited action.

UTL/RHP Kasen Yates

Injury to hip limited his 2023, but still ended with a 1.29 ERA in 16 IP with 17 Ks and 4 saves. Clutch performance in state semis with 4.1 IP in relief for the win against Sweetwater. May also impact the lineup as a strong bat - was hitting .462 in 26 ABs last season before his injury kept him out of the lineup the rest of the year.
