Georgetown vs. College Station

BRYAN, TX - In an attempt to beat the incoming threat of rain, Georgetown and College Station moved up their first game of the Area UIL Playoffs to Thursday. Both teams have been included in our Power 25 Team rankings at some point this season, with Georgetown steadily moving up as the season and currently ranked No. 3 Overall.

Georgetown took control of this one on the first pitch of the game when 2019 3B Jeffrey David attacked the first pitch he saw with a seed up the middle for a single, then advanced to second as the CF bobbled the exchange. After a sacrifice bunt, three-hole hitter Cole Posey walked, then stole second, and cleanup hitter Ty Tilson drove in the first two runs of the game with a missile to centerfield. 2-0 Eagles.

Georgetown added a run in the second when Jeffrey David got a two out RBI on a check swing tapper to first base and beat out the flip to the bag with a head first dive. 3-0 Eagles.

College Station had a chance to answer in the bottom of the second when Alexander walked and 2021 C Chanden Scamardo singled to left field. But Georgetown starter Grant Wood got a punchout, and 2019 C Wyatt Childress back picked the runner at first base for the second out, and Wood followed with another punchout on a slider to end the inning.

Georgetown extended their lead to 4-0 in the 5th when Wyatt Childress walked, stole second base, stole third base, then scored on a balk call.

College Station got their lone run in the sixth when Zach Williams hit an RBI double to right-centerfield. In the seventh, the Cougars brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but closer Reese Grimes induced a ground ball to seal the 4-1 victory.

Team Notes:

It will be interesting to see how the top of the Georgetown lineup matches up against College Station’s likely Game 2 starter, 2019 LHP Austin Teel, a Wake Forest commit. Teel has the ability to dominate a game on the mound, and College Station’s lineup is solid, they were only a big knock or two away from making game one a lot closer.

Georgetown’s top four hitters have been getting it done all year with David, Childress, Posey, and Tilson. The entire club is fun to watch, they take a super fast round of pre-game I/O and carry that over to the game where Coach Foster’s guys play fast and aggressive with what looks like “No Fear” of failure.
