Scouting Report

10/16/16 Athletic 6-foot-2,  180-pound frame, room to add strength and size. Quality defender, presents strong target, shows athletic actions with loose, fluid hips, quality receiver of the baseball with soft hands, and solid blocking skills. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with carry and accuracy on throws that produced a positional velocity of 75 mph and a pop time of 2.00. Switch-hitter that hits from balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, short stride, and quality lower half drive. Line-drive, gap-to-gap type hitter with fluid rhythm, a strong, compact stroke and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 82 mph. Also posted a 7.3 60-yard dash.



The Prep Baseball Report Mississippi scouting staff recently sat down with Ocean Springs catcher to discuss his recent commitment to Pearl River Community College. Below is a transcript of our question and answer session:

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?
McKay: I expected it to be a fun and a happy time and get to know a lot of guys. 

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
McKay: No distance did not play a role in my decision to play at the next level. 

PBR: Where did the college you chose first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
McKay: They saw me play with the Louisiana Knights at a PBR showcase.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?
McKay: JT Ginn, he is a top level pitcher with great potential. 

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were an elite player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
McKay: I realized I was an elite player when I was in the process of talking to top tier college organizations.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
McKay: I was looking for a hard nose, get after it program that was very competitive. 

PBR: What is your best attribute as a baseball player and how does that transfer onto the field for your team?
McKay: The biggest attribute was having faith in my family and the good Lord.

PBR: What part of your game needs the biggest improvement, why, and what will you do to improve it?
McKay: My biggest improvement I think would be to strengthen my arm and work on my accuracy. I will work on this with bands and doing arm workouts and stretches.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
McKay: Never give up on the process and strive to get better everyday. 

PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?
McKay: I lift 2 times a day, throw everyday, and hit continuously. 

PBR: What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?
McKay: I like most about Pearl River Community College is the location and the people in the community. The key factors were the hard nose coaches and the knowledge they posses! The other would be I know the staff at PRCC would fight for me to get to a great Division 1 school.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?McKay: Southeastern Louisiana University, Missisippi Gulf Coast Community College, Meridian Community College.
