Player Spotlight:1B Jake Taylor (Maize, 2017)

Jacob Taylor (Maize, 2017) is a 6-foot-3 185-pound first baseman and right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2017 class from Maize HS in Wichita, KS.  He attended the Class of 2017 Games in June and the Top Unsigned Prospect Showcase in October.

Taylor posted a 78 mph positional velo, with clean exchanges, and with quick footwork He makes accurate throws across the infield.

Taylor, a lefty-htter, runs a 7.17 60, a 4.13 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 89 mph.  During batting practice, he showed some pull pop with mostly a line drive approach. He has an open stance, balanced set-up, and hands work inside the ball. During game action at the Class of 2017 Games, Taylor singled twice, one a ground ball to the pull side the other a line drive to the opposite field.

On the mound, Taylor’s fastball worked between 71-78 mph and showed a 63-65 mph curveball that showed to be sharp at times and had 12/6 shape. Taylor’s delivery shows some rhythm, uses his glove side to provide deception from this over the top arm slot and a square, athletic finish.

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Taylor: My number one thing that I'm looking for is a school with a successful baseball program that can help me reach my full potential. Secondarily, I would like the school to be somewhat close to home so my family could watch me play.

PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do?

Taylor: I was an integral part in our 5A 3rd place finishing team, batting .391 with an OBP of .482 and among the team leaders in RBI's in the AVCTL Div. 1, one of the toughest leagues in Kansas. Pitching, I had an ERA of 1.59 with a WHIP of .86 and got the win in the state tournament against Maize South.

PBR: What are you goals for your senior season?

Taylor: My goal is to help our team win every game this year and finish with a state trophy.

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

Taylor: I play with the Wichita Sluggers in the summer and in the fall.

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

Taylor: I am a wideout and captain on the football team at Maize.

PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?

Taylor: I got a 25 on my ACT and have a 3.65 GPA.
